Old songs on the UK charts

The only explanation I can muster is that deeply embedded societal sexism only permits men to be capable of providing all time repeatable classics, women reduced to dancefloor staples and throwaway pop.

I mean I'm pretty sure that's the first time Madonna has ever recharted without a specific re-release. While nobodies like Vance Joy and the Goo Goo Dolls are in and out the bottom of the charts. Coldplay songs are elevated to classics, Sugababes, pop fodder.
 
You can't even blame boomers. The songs that get elevated to the charts usually have decent streaming (hardly the domain of grandparents) until Netflix, Tik Tok or Strictly decide to play them and get elevated to the big league.

This is what I was thinking - is it music by women is ‘more for’ women and gays and therefore throwaway?

Or maybe just lazy listening and there’s the ‘big’ male ones, whereas the female ones tend to be spread amongst a bunch of their hits? It is a bit odd though, given, at least the last 20 years does genuinely seem, to be a mix of both male and female led tracks in the charts.
 
Out of those listed only Bedingfield is solo female, and that’s largely due to its movie resurgence earlier (it always does well, but I don’t think it ever troubled the chart regularly pre this year).

Not an especially interesting week. Most songs just bobbing around, although Linkin Park drop out, I presume the hype around their recent comeback has slowed down.

Coldplay back in for the first time since early August, Hozier for the first time since May.

Worth noting only one of the above songs reached number 1 (Viva La Vida). The lowest peaking songs are:

#13 Linger
#24 Dreams
#25 Don't Dream It's Over
#29 Sound of Silence
#47 Blame It On The Rain

The rest all went top 10, although four of them underperformed initially getting to #10 (including Mr Brightside).

Dreams, DDIO and BIOTR were all US #1 OR 2 (Linger #8) so much bigger retro hits from a US perspective for playlists?

They're all very well known in the UK, that all underperformed as singles. Aside from Blame It On the Rain (which is from a Netflix show) and Sound of Silence (the remix I think must be a Tik Tok hit) they're all from much bigger albums.

I was thinking about this. Two of the biggest female fronted bands are all backed by men. I can't think of any all female groups that have big GH albums (Little Mix are the only one on the charts currently).

In fact there are only a few women with legacy or GH albums on the charts - Whitney, Amy, Katy, Lana, Britney, Rihanna, Taylor, Adele, Little Mix, Gaga and Dua are vastly outnumbered.

There are 41 legacy or GH by exclusively male acts and there are 17 by the female equivalent.
 
I expect 1D to make a significant impact next week - inevitably. They're 5, 7, 21, 22, 27 etc on streaming.
 
Fairly sure someone somewhere in broadcast or social media has said at some point "his death has made a major impact", without meaning to make a grotty pun.

I guess it's not a common type of demise.

Lot's of re-entries, mostly from One Direction and Liam Payne. I had no idea he has so little solo stuff, or it wasn't that notable than the Rita Ora collab would re-chart.

The other re-entry is Careless Whisper, which I believe was re-released on vinyl. It can't be a common event, than a song re-charted based on a physical release.

At £30 for a 12" picture disc, I'm not surprised it didn't go any higher. They're doing physicals for Last Christmas again this year - the inevitable zoetrope picture disc is among them....
 
I don't even remember that One Direction song that went in the highest.
 
I thought the same but it turns out it's a medium to big meme song and I'd heard the same 8 seconds of it as everyone else.

Not an especially interesting week. One Direction tracks all on the way down. Many Halloween tracks re-entering.

Most notably perhaps is Danny Elfman, who's 1993 'This Is Halloween' from The Nightmare Before Christmas, gets only it's second week on the chart, the previous being #14 last year. Although he did have 6 weeks on the album chart in 1989 with the original score of the Batman soundtrack. He never charted with his band Oingo Boingo, infamous for their track 'Little Girls'.

We'll probably have to wait for the new year for Fleetwood Mac to get both their classics to 100wks, although Dreams will be close, as I'm expecting Mariah, George, Andrew, Shane, Kirsty and friends to start hitting in a couple of weeks. I will of course keep you fully informed.

I think you mean The Nightmare Before Christmas!

Strange how of all of the Halloween songs, non in the Top 40. Not quite having the same impact as Christmas songs.

Surely that’s cause they pretty much get played on the weekend at nights out or on the day itself. No shops are playing Hallowe’en music, for example.

Strictly used to at least give some a bigger boost, but they’ve been quite loose with the definition of “spooky” songs over the last few years.
 
Who really gives a shit about Halloween to play the odd song more than once or twice for a day or two?
 
Halloween was also on a Thursday this week, and for that day they estimate streams (based on however many days prior), so that will cost them as that’s their biggest day. Next year, with it being on a Friday and then having Saturday for additional parties will probably mean more of an impact.

It really is nuts. As a Steps geek, Scared of the Dark normally gets around 2,500 streams a day on Spotify. But this month it’s been averaging about 15k, including 30k odd on Wednesday. They’re on the main Spotify playlist which pretty much shows how much playlisting impacts. And how much the general public rely on it.

They’ve updated for Thursday now. 150,000 streams - 60 times it’s normal amount.
 
I expect there to plenty of Halloween parties this weekend, so a few may cling on.

I was invited to one tonight, but I'd rather die in a trash compactor.

Quite a week for old songs, most of them climbing up or returning. All the Halloween hits are dumped, while Mariah and Wham make very early debuts. I was expecting them next week. Get ready for the onslaught over the next 6-7 weeks.

No clear reason for the upsurge this week, as we only lost five Halloween songs, while Everywhere and Don't Stop Believin' surge 12 and 13 places respectively.

The biggest head scratcher for me, is Dirty Cash returning to the chart for the first time in 27 years (there was a remix in 1997 that charted at #69, while it originally peaked at #2 in 1990). My normal assumption is Strictly, this time of year, but why this particular track? I note it didn't even rechart, when it was remade by noted woman beater Dizzee Rascal.
 
I just looked it up on Twitter, there seem to be multiple Dirty Cash related memes. Maybe Tik Tok then.
