Old TOTP (BBC4)

These episodes are all over the place - the charts were a riot in 1990; there really is almost everything. The Song For Europe sounds so utterly dated.
 
I had no idea Better the Devil You Know was 1990.

I was kinda losing interest in music at this point.

I think that was the first one since Wouldn't Change A Thing where I thought "oh...that's actually decent".
 
Jesus Jones. Their first album was a blast, had it on vinyl. This sounds OK actually...although they clearly think it's much better than it really is.
 
Bowie's "Fame 90" was horrible. So clunky compared to the slinky original....
 
Two top 10 new entries. The days of the slow burner hit are beginning to fade, although 1995 was when most no.1s were new entries.
 
This NKOTB video with the lead singer singing to a little girl is grotesque.

Did 1997 not have something stupid like 38 #1 singles, mostly for one week?
 
I remembered this Cure song as a bit "by-numbers" but it's actually rather pretty. Porl Thompson bored enough to hold his guitar upside down with no strap.
 
Why did TOTP always cut the beginning off of "Vogue"? Was it something in the video?
 
"Killer" still sounds great. Hard to think of Seal as having been a bit of a cheesy quaver tho', innit?

Oh, there was a whole STINK about LAP from the pearl-clutchers so the thing was cut to ribbons or they only showed the wee bit at the end that showed it had all been a play or whatever (sorry, spoilers).
 
I met one of my best friends after she sang "Black Velvet" on the karaoke at a work "do". She was ace and I just had to tell her.

Very much imported outrage I feel.

Madonna really did very little that shocking with retrospect. Yet 80s and 90s audiences managed so consistently to find outrage.

Although the sex book was pretty out there.

His first album did tho'. For several weeks, IIRC. The divergence between the single and album charts was particularly wide in the early 90s and didn't close up a bit until Britpop.

It never took much to ignite a particular constituency. There were complaints to the BBC for playing Jesus Jones as well. It was all confected.
 
Bugger me, Faith No More. With a proper rock song too. Mike Patton still playing idiot metal doofus kid too, a persona he would ditch after this album cycle. This actually sounds ace.
 
This most recent episode is limp as fuck. Pasadenas, Paul Young, Hothouse Flowers :manson:
 
This is what I mean - Unique 3, a proper underground hip-hop track and here it is on TOTP.
 
Watching Morrissey singing such a brilliant song about ableism and the disenfranchisement of the disabled from decisions made about their lives and their autonomy really does make you wonder how the hell he ended up stanning for "politicians" who support eugenics.
