Who knew that within 30 yeara Billy Ray Cyrus would have a much more famous daughter and Marie from Roxette would be dead?
 
Why on earth did Snap not perform Rhythm on TOTP? There were plenty of opportunities.

Although they probably wanted to make the most of the video after hiring a fucking SPACE STATION for it. Talk about audacious.

Remarkably, Clapton has actually got worse with age. He's been an absolute prick from the very beginning - he left The Yardbirds because he didn't like "For Your Love". First - a great song, second - be grateful for your first hit, you racist shagger.
 
The first episode this week was rather good.

First duo Nana performance (and last until Move In My Direction from when the show was sent to die on BBC2).
 
The Top 10 before the first performance? Christ, they were throwing everything at the wall.

I have no memory of this Wet Wet Wet song. Rightly.
 
Yaas, The Wedding Present. This would be their last TOTP appearance; for years, I assumed it was because they pretty much took this piss re: miming here but David Gedge later said that they were asked back a few times before the year was out but, as the singles had already sold out of their limited pressing by the time TOTP came around, they didn't see the point. Shame.

Anyway, Flying Saucer is a classic and still absolutely slays when they do it live.
 
I have no recollection of this Jason Donovan song either. Which is fair because it is piss weak.

OH, they ditched finishing with the theme tune and went back to showing a video over the credits too. A daft moved to have stopped playing out with an actual chart record.
 
Good grief, Claudia Simon was rubbish...she's just fucked up Sunscreem's intro by forgetting their bloody name!
 
This Jon Secada tune has held up surprisingly well. I think I like it more now than I did at the time, actually.

The one thing you can say in her favour is that she hasn't refused permission for her episodes to be shown, unlike SOMEONE

That Betty Boo tune feels a bit thin these days. Quite brave to go for a breezy summer anthem in the UK, where we were equally likely to have downpours every second day.
 
Madness chucking a few Easter eggs into their performance. The "Divine Madness" compilation was a huge success, perfectly catching that wave of "all the hits on one CD!" compilations that the 90s brought us.
 
Worth nothing that, despite this being a 'comeback', the oldest members of Madness are just 34 here (Mike Barson and Lee Thompson). Suggs is 31.
 
Sir Mix-A-Lot - who would have guessed that this would have lasted the pace in the way it has??

Yes, that’s what they implied. They spent a good few minutes talking about it, coupled with clips of other songs (ones that actually charted but still weren’t anywhere NEAR the top of the chart). Then at the end they just mentioned I Will Always Love You for all of 5 seconds and that was that.

I know these Story Of shows focus on the studio performances of the year and not a complete retrospective of the biggest hits of the year. It’s obvious they’re going to be able to chat to Wet Wet Wet and Shakespeare’s Sister a lot more than dead stars who never played in the studio, but to all but ignore the 10-week Christmas #1, then imply that somehow The Orb and their brief 1998 association with Robbie Williams is somehow worthy of a lengthy segment over even mentioning huge hits by Boyz II Men, Charles & Eddie and Tasmin Archer? Bizarre.
