They deffo left the swear word in "My Name Is Prince". The subtitles can say "funk around" all they like.

Much later, but I remember George Michael getting away with quite a bit of swearing on the TV and radio with Fastlove and Freeek! Fastlove saying “bullshit” was odd because they’d mute out “shit” from Alanis Morissette and Bon Jovi songs in the same year.

I remember that too, now you mention it - Fastlove was not censored at all, in my memory.

There was something about Sunscreem that just absolutely screamed "gap year".
 
My memory is that there was a definite feeling that Madonna had jumped the shark with "Erotica" and that she was just trying a bit too hard to be shocking without having a decent song to back it up. Laughable now but I remember a lot of journalists - both reputable and otherwise - saying she was "over".

It was from the same charity compilation as the Manics' version of the Theme From MASH - Ruby Trax, compiled by the NME in which mostly indie bands covered #1 singles from the 40 years since the charts began. Curve's I Feel Love which turned up in a recent ASFM was from it as well.

This, however, does not excuse how utterly abysmal The Farm's "effort" was/is.
 
Way to make your entire programme look shit by having "Virginia Plain" in between The Farm and Chris Rea. Bad times.
 
The Chippendales? I had driven this from my mind and I am really quite cheesed off that it is now back in it.

They really made the most out of their indie talking heads for the last couple of story of shows. So many probably not deserved double duties.
 
I had completely forgotten about that dreadful knocked up in five minutes Super Mario affair.

And followed up by Jason Donovan treating us to his interpretation of As Time Goes By. If that performance didn't scream end of chart run I don't know what does.
 
NEIL DIAMOND?! Doing Morning Has Broken?! Not sure that was the best way to celebrate 1500 TOTP episodes.

I could just about smell the mothballs on that blouse and those trousers too.

No lie here. Which track was it? They didn't perform on TOTP very often if I recall. But the ones I've seen are all perfection. They were so incredibly polished and professional in every live performance. You'd never know how bad it was behind the scenes.
 
Don't remember that Go West song...and who picked Leo Sayer as a classic from the archives? :D
 
"Be My Baby" holds up but that's largely because it was a well-executed pastiche.
 
Little Angels were on TOTP with every darn single...BritRock is a constant subculture and the modern charts may be the lesser for its absence.

It is, yes. By that time, I was well into my surly indie-kid phase so I was definitely in a bubble radio-wise. I certainly remember their 80s hits well; I even liked some of them.

Great song. It was a brave choice for a single, for sure. It was best served as an album closer, in which context its impact was pretty much devastating.
