I have every respect for Ian Broudie without ever wanting to listen to The Lightning Seeds.
 
Not fun fact - 'Tongue' is the song REM were playing when Bill Berry suffered the brain hemorrhage that stopped their tour and led to him leaving the band.
 
I'm not sure anyone listened to the lyrics of "Caught By The Fuzz" before having it on the show...
 
People talk about "effortless cool" too much, let's talk about Julian Cope's effortful cool. Neu! vest and jester's hat, bassist in a Yoko Ono t-shirt, shirtless guitarist with a fluorescent CND armband, Thighpaulsandra being Thighpaulsandra in (fake) fur coat and 70s synths, shitless drummer with a fluorescent kit. They look fucking amazing and Cope's voice is superb here. Such a great song too - if it had been by a young Britpop band, it would have gone top 5. Since it was by a weird "old" hippy...well...at least TOTP loved him.
 
Chris Lowe looking as comfortable as a man who has just caught crabs and has both hands tied behind his back.
 
Country House, at least, boasts the most obtuse guitar solo ever heard on a number one single.

Such a shame she misses out the ad-libs at the end as that's what really sells the song. I reckon she could have climbed if she'd pulled it off. I'm guessing the "I need you here today" didn't quite feel right for her maybe. God, if only we had got a 100% Motiv8 performance out of her at the time.

I'm disappointed at the hate for Clock's Everybody. I loved it. It really was the last she sings, he raps Europop song. 2 Unlimited & Cappella by far missed the top 10 with their next singles equaling the end of them. I liked Oh What A Night. But it was rubbish in comparison to their more dancey songs.
 
Runaway - probably my favourite Janet Jackson song. Paper thin, but it’s just so HAPPY.
 
I always forget quite how novelty N-Trance’s other songs were :D Forever was the only time they seemed to actively try to recreate Set You Free, and that was years later
