Old TOTP (BBC4)

"Everything I Wanted", & although I do like it, was such a MOMENTUM STOPPER for Dannii. Baffling when a remixed "Disrememberance" would have been an ideal second single.

N-Trance are strange. You’re right, after Set You Free it was mostly utter shit, but then during the great Llorennaissance of 2002 they randomly dropped the quite lovely ‘Forever’.

"Torn" may have been played to death on radio over the years, but it's one of the strongest debuts you could wish for. I loved it so much at this time.

That and the POPPERS UP YER CHUFF FANTASTIC ‘Someone New’ was just languishing on some Japanese bonus track. Bizarre!

So PERPLEXING. That would have been 3 strong hits & then chuck out "Everything I Wanted" as single #4. No clue what the record company were thinking - that's an obvious campaign that was totally mishandled!

I’d forgotten how dismally dull Embrace were. What a complete non-voice that singer had.
Total Oasis-lite & although Liam Gallagher can be a total cock, credit where it's due, he'd have turned this into the ROUSING INDIE ANTHEM they clearly intended it to be. Embrace bloke just makes it into a dirge with his LIFELESS delivery.

I like that one Embrace song that Coldplay wrote for them. Other than that I agree, flat honking dirge.

Last chart appearance for Michael Bolton. Did he stop having hits because he cut his hair? Or did everyone wake up & realise it was all SOULLESS BILGE?

Ashes was a legitimate banger. But yes, everything else Embrace did felt like they were just trying to inoculate us against the future evil of Travis

Funnily enough, that song was written by Babyface. It also sounded strikingly similar to Joy by Blackstreet.

It's forgotten just how quickly N-Trance went from an all-time floor filler classic in "Set You Free" to a bunch of shitey tacky 70s covers a la Clock. "D'Ya Think I'm Sexy" is awful. I wonder if they just ran out of original ideas quickly & decided on the cynical cash-in route.

D’Ya Think I’m Sexy was inexplicably huge here, keeping Spice Up Your Life off the top.

I despised it for that at the time, but I have to admit it’s a bit of a HOOT these days

I agree it was not the right follow up but that was a very good live vocal by Dannii on Everything I Wanted.

I don't remember this Ricky Martin song at all...how long was it between Un Dos Tres Maria and Livin' La Vida Loca?

Has there ever been justice for "Some Kind Of Bliss" or is it still thought of as a bit of a misstep?

The Sundays had such a strange career. Fucked off for ages at a time and seemingly did well enough to just retire after three albums.

I'm all for equality but did Sly and Robbie really need to have that ginger twat Hucknell on their cover of Night Nurse?

Fuck me, Mark Morrison - he really did FUCK IT spectacularly. Only God can judge you, eh? M'lud did not agree...

I haven't actually heard "Candle In The Wind 1997" since, well, 1997. The lyrics are absolutely terrible.

Chumbawamba having such a huge hit when the monarchy were having an absolute nightmare was weirdly apt.

Absolutely hated that Dario G record and I still do. I dare say Nick Laird-Clowes earned a few quid from it tho'. As for this shite-awful, community college staging of The Lion King to do with it, get fucked.

This dismal Robbie Williams Oasis-soundalike is particularly poor too. He never returned to this sound after 'Angels' reset his solo career, did he? Absolute garbage.

Mind you, I'll take a dozen choreographed dance routines over Jo Whiley being an indie snob about it...

I love M.O.R. by Blur but they look utterly miserable here. Graham Coxon sourly refusing to left the camera see his face at all, Alex just sauntering around, Dave miming with all the enthusiasm of an accountant on jury duty.

Oasis well and truly off the boil here - after the promise of the brilliantly overblown "D'You Know What I Mean?", it was straight back to this by-numbers crap. Little did we know that this was no blip.

Shameless rip off of "All The Young Dudes" & I always felt this was the tipping point into MEAT & POTATOES ROCK for them.

It's just so DULL. That it does nothing we hadn't heard from them before isn't the worst of it, it's so cheerless. The chutzpah of thinking you could add another song called "Stand By Me" to the canon needs to be met by some actual enthusiasm. Suddenly, they looked the way they sounded - distant, uninterested. The poised disinterest that was cool-as when soundtracked by Rock & Roll Star became emblematic when accompanied by this toss.

There are few things more hopeful and yet so doomed as No Doubt trying to sell us their usual ska-punk influenced drivel after having a proper hit with something that sounded absolutely nothing like their usual work. Dip 'em in dogshit.

Joga by Bjork. A masterpiece. One of the most extraordinary songs of my lifetime, and longer. I had to write about it recently and it beat me, I couldn't do it. Shame they cut so much out of it but that's telly for you. RIP Mark Bell.

I have no memory of Catch but the sound of Britpop's barrel having its bottom turned to sawdust it about all I can hear.

I've been struggling to find the energy for these episodes. I'm remembering why the pop scene - including the indie pop scene - was losing my interest. 911 have opened the episode I've just started and they're at No 5. This is, from any possible standpoint, shite - generic, thin, dull. It's followed by N-Trance doing that awful version of Do You Think I'm Sexy and basically pretending to be the KLF. It just makes me miss The KLF. By this time I was 24 and maybe every 24 year old feels this about chart music after they've found their taste and their aesthetic.

"Spice Up Your Life". Really reminds you of how easily they cornered and dominated pop music for that 2 and a half years. Simple but colourful, full of hooks and bloody good fun.

Dannii's song here is better than I remember...takes a bit to get going and not sure the production gives it the best shot but the producers probably wrote it so hey ho.
