I have started watching these this year. I enjoyed the Belle Stars being on every week and agree that Mezzoforte were quite confusing.

Youthful Pat Sharp and Gary Davies were even more annoying than not so youthful Pat Sharp and Gary Davies.
 
I wasn't enjoying China Crisis in the past few episodes and thought the presenters were being just a tad over complimentary.

Also for some reason I have never liked Tears For Fears.

Rather enjoying Sharon Redd (RIP).

I quite liked 'Christian' but they seemed rather simpering. And yeah the presenter arse kissing was kinda weird.

Yeah, she's been one of the revelations for me. Sad to hear of her demise (whenever that was was).

I've also been QUITE PARTIAL to the Belle Stars.
 
Are there any more Stars on 45esque medley hits to come? They were truly dreadful for 81 and 82, and having been a baby at the time, made me wonder why older generations hated Jive Bunny so much, when they were exactly the same just a few years earlier.

They kinda disappeared as quickly as they arrived as far as I know. I know by the time the ABBA medley happened they were missing the top 10 (although that may just be due to ABBA's unpopularity during the era).

The 1950s and 60s nostalgia has been pretty unappealing. Why they felt the need to show the Beatles reissues...

My most enduring memory of China Crisis (including their songs) was my father always saying one of them looked like a 'Mongolian' whenever they were on.

I've always like Tears For Fears for the music. But Roland Orzabal is just as unappealing in retrospect as he was at the time.

I'd forgotten how BLAND Gary Davies was. And of his predilection for the slash neck top :grim:
 
My favourite discoveries of the last few weeks have been Belle Stars, Haysi Fantayzee and Change by Tears for Fears. Oh and falling back in live Speak Like A Child! Had no idea Style Council appeared so quickly after The Jam.

Living for the Bananarama performance complete with arm dance routine.
 
Didn't realise Jim "Foetus" Thirwell had been on TOTP with Orange Juice!
 
It's the subtle trolling by the dancers...ripping things up during "Rip It Up" and Scottish country dancing reels during Big Country.
 
I always hated Big Country

I really lost interest in music for the first few years of the 80s, it's quite odd how many things from them I JUST DON'T KNOW AT ALL

Not the strongest episode, but 'Don't Talk To Me About Love' is amazing by any measure.
 
Obviously all the blacklisted episodes are magnifying matters, but I find it quite interesting to see how acts I remember from my youth as having really long careers seem to be arriving and then on the way out with seeming alacrity.

Then again, things did last much longer when you were younger. Everyone knows the school summer holidays used to last about three years.

I think things genuinely moved more quickly. The Specials split up after Ghost Town, Fun Boy Three arrived within a matter of months but split after less than 2 years with Terry Hall arriving with The Colourfield not long after that. Paul Weller barely waited until the Jam were cold in the grave before making the first Style Council records. Nick Hayward was on TOTP with Haircut One Hundred in Sept/Oct 1982 and then as a solo artist by March 1983. Things were a lot more spontaneous in the pop industry at that time.

Mari Wilson does seem entirely non essential. Mind you, I quite liked "Just What I Always Wanted".
 
Do we know if there was a reason for the fairground theme or did the BBC just have one spare that week?
 
Oh it's Easter.

Mr Ag recognised Tracey Ullman from NOW. Aside from that quirk, the 60s nostalgia is getting boring now.

Yes, she was one of the 'Wilsations', although I'm not sure if they were ever credited.

I don't mind some of the Style Council stuff but his dancing redefined awkward. Getting Tracie to distract by mooching about in front of him wasn't nearly enough.

Mari Wilson was on that pop quiz revival thing over Xmas looking very well preserved but seemed a little po-faced.

Twisted Sister were quite the vision.
