Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

As I've said elsewhere Saville and DLT's era come to an end soon, sadly Mike Smith remained until 1988. Prick. Glad he's dead.

There's been endless discussion of this. Apparently he caused a stink about it when he was alive and the BBC lost interest in fighting it and then after he died Sarah Greene for no obvious reason has maintained the ban.

I don't normally POP IN here as I don't get chance to watch my TOTP "live" anymore.

Fucking OUTRAGEOUS.

Though I still find it ridiculous that they don't just edit out JIMMY ET AL as that's STILL got to be cheaper than new programming that will replace TOTP when it runs out and save the BBC money in the long run.

At the current pace I reckon they'll reach the end by 2029, so I doubt they're too worried.

Top tip: watch it on iPlayer. They sometimes skip songs on the BBC4 broadcast.

We all know WHAT JIMMY DID, but we all grew up with him and have had him looking super sleazy on the news for 5 years now, it's hardly gonna break society to see him presenting and it's not as if DLT even DID MUCH.

I mean we still have Tommy Vance and he's utterly repugnant on every level.

I usually do watch it on the iPlayer anyway...

I'm more worried about "the vintage years", or mine, anyway. '84 onwards is MY TIME.

FEEL FREE to comment if you're not watching "live". The more the fucking merrier!

Oh he was disgusting with his rock shit and horrible face. I don't see why HE'S still being shown given the KING OF THE ORGIES revelations, although I suppose he might not necessarily have been one for snouting round hospital morgues UNLIKE SOME

I never heard of that. After Googling it turns out that Steve Wright may well been (one of) the other guilty party(s) involved in whores for airplay.

Gary Davies has a whiff of Pat Sharp, both of them were doable in the 80s. Also, him who married Anthea Turner after he chopped his mullet off wasn't bad.

I spotted a member of Depeche Mode in the Everything Counts video who was cute, then I've always found Dave Gahan oddly fit.

Steve Wright is a fucking cunt and was even back then! You can tell when he's co-hosting he's desperately chomping at the bit to make it all about him.

I can't unsee the mullet, even after it went.

And wasn't he always a bit sallow?

This talk of Pat Sharp has made me remember 'The Roxy' though. I wonder if ITV still have that lying around somewhere to bung on ITV3 or something.

:D He seems to have aged quite well if you like that sort of thing

Personally I'd have splayed 'em for MICK

Must be Alan Wilder, easily the best looking member of Depeche Mode but then, they were slim pickings really. Martin Gore is living proof that you don;t need good looks to succeed in the music business (see also Thom Yorke, Pink Floyd)

I'm just catching up with all the Depeche Mode stuff that was on BBC4 last week, and it's sent me on a bit of a wiki spiral.

I don't think I ever knew that Martin Gore was mixed race.

And we had that exact conversation about 20 minutes ago!

There are times when I slightly fancy Andy Fletcher, but Mr L is predisposed to disliking him intensely, as he's the cousin of his very first ex.

Having not seen tonight's episode I was saddened to be briefly hoaxed by this tweet:

What was the POINT of the Style Council?

Paul Weller writhing around with his shirt off, is one of the twelve least sexy things I have ever seen.

Paul Weller, appears to have been embarrassed by how good The Jam actually were. In a bit to erase the cheering memeories held by his audience, he spent 8 years pretending to be a French art student before becoming Grumpy The Scarecrow prior to his current incarnation as MidLife Crisis Man.

Cunt.

That episode also proving the "Alan Wilder As Hottest Member Of Depeche Mode" hypothesis. Note the inter-group hierarchy that so frequently had him miming the drums. Note also that he later actually did play the drums for them.

It's Gary Davies and DLT time, here's the episode from 18/08/83

https://wetransfer.com/downloads/c6662d9a6b4a8e9c9cfcff8cd348921a20170412151330/d28002

The edition from 25/08/83 is on the previous page and the episode that will be shown on BBC4 tonight is from 01/09/83. 1984 should only be about two months away as there are only 13 episodes left from 1983 that can be shown. Fortunately Mike Smith seemed to go AWOL for much of the rest of 1983 and even Savile and DLT were absent most of the time.
