I love Thieves Like Us but it vexes me that it was a hit while the absolute pop classic that is The Perfect Kiss missed the top 40 entirely. What the hell happened?

A couple were passable in a "the lights are about to switch on let's cop off before I regret my decision". Some are fucking gross. To be fair, almost all men are better groomed these days.

There's no TOTP 1984 next week and the week after we'll only have one TOTP, on the Thursday. Tonight (Friday) it was TOTP from 10/05/84, a week on Thursday it will be the episode from 17/05/84 with none on the Friday. The week after that the repeats will recommence from 07/06/84 as the episodes from 24/05/84 and 31/05/84 feature Mike Smith and DLT respectively. No sign of the Mike Smith hosted edition yet, but the DLT one from 31/05/84 is already on line. Watch it while it is still available!

 
So I've just re-watched that TOTP performance (Pointer Sisters obviously). What the FUCK were they thinking? I can understand the beefy gay dancer and I get the robot - it was the 1980s. But the gay fan dancers. I mean was the short fat bald gay guy, one of only TWO people they could get to perform such a DELICATE SKILL?

Notes:

1) The Smiths looking like the coolest band in the world. Which, at that point, they probably were.
2) Madness struggling, minor outbreaks of zaniness at contrast with serious song - group itching to do their usual "performance" but it's totally inappropriate and they know it. One of their very best singles but the beginning of "the end".
3) David Sylvian - that video blew my tiny little mind and I actually bought that 7" off the back of that showing of it. Great record.
 
The Smiths not having much luck here - both performances of "What Difference Does It Make" were canned due to Smith/Travis as well.

I bought David Sylvian's single purely for the B side, 'Forbidden Colours', which he'd released as a single the previous year and which I never got around to buying. I'm still not too keen on 'Red Guitar' but I absolutely love the B side...
 
That's the most :disco: episode for a while... Womack and Womack, Ultravox, Hazel Dean and Deniece Williams (who was absolute rubbish)
 
I seem to remember Brothers In Arms was first album that went massive on the back of CDs, as much as they were around for a few years before.
 
Yes, CDs had a slow take-off and Brothers In Arms was the first album to bring a proper surge in interest and sales of players, partly due to the group talking it up and also editing the album a bit for vinyl; the full length album was only on the CD. When Peter Gabriel added an extra track to the hugely successful "So" album on CD in '86, things seriously began to move. It was Thatcher time and CDs were one of the symbols of perceived success/quality, not only having the cash for the kit but also the spare cash to pay twice the price for an album due to the "superior" listening experience.
 
There was a rumour at the time that the video for that Ultravox song couldn't be shown after the "blast" because it was loads of people lying dead or screaming with their skin hanging off etc. Only when I saw this the other night did I google this and discover it to be total bollocks.

ALSO: How long have we missed? Alvin Stardust falling out the top 10? I don't even recall he had a song out! And the Pointer Sisters were #2 and now out the top 10. It feels like 3 weeks have passed...
 
And here we hit a landmark. Wake Up Before You Go Go was the first pop song I was consciously aware of at the time.

We missed last week's apparently due to the double whammy of Paul Gadd and Mike Smith being a (dead) cunt and not allowing any of shows to be repeated.
 
I'm just catching up on the last month's worth of episodes... lots of classics but god there was some shite in 1984.

Weather Girls were fabulous, Martha Wash has always had such a drag queen face. Funny how she would end up in another "duo" of sorts with Jocelyn Brown twelve years later.

Fun spotting Dee Fearon of Baby D fame on the maracas for Phil Fearon & Galaxy!

Did Kiesza take inspiration from Tracey Ullman's My Guy video for part of her dance in Hideaway!?
 
That Susanna song was quite a trial and Peter Powell seemed to be fondling himself at the end of the questionable Rod Stewart video.

I don't know 'Life On Your Own'. It's alright. Phil Oakey looks a fucking mess, while Susan looks fucking radiant.
