As much as CURIOSITY were a load of old CACK I almost feel sorry for them being denied the TOP SPOT by TWO ancient revivals. Then again if they hadn't been shit maybe that wouldn't have happened

Rick's WHEN I FALL IN LOVE is even WORSE than I remember and it's nice to see he AGREES. I'd give good money to find out exactly what NEIL TENNANT said to CAROL DECKER but alas it doesn't seem to be on the record. I hope it was VERY SCATHING INDEED

I feel hopelessly lost with it at the moment as well. And I think sky+ seems to have fucked up - it looks like I may have duplicates stored and missing others, but I've no idea when it was on over Christmas.

I rely on iPlayer to tell me what edition is next but it got lost too; mind you, it took me back to that last Peel episode so maybe it was doing me a favour.

I had "CoL" on a 12" single - 5 songs, all acapella. I was given it for Xmas alongside my first hi-fi - it was a "Saisho", bought in Currys on Argyle Street in Glasgow. £69 - quite a lot in 1986. Pretty sure that was their own brand. 3 band radio, turntable and 2 cassette decks. It was a wee beauty.

And this record takes me right back to that. A few goosebumps always rise when everyone but Paul Heaton drops out and he sings "the place in which we were born".

Old Carol really does seem to enjoy cultivating a grudge. She's probably lying but I do quite like the idea of Phil and Paul being shoved to one side for the entrance of the brothers Gibb.

Where did they find Terence's backing singers? Quite the odd pair.

I had never heard Santa Claus is On the Dole. It's far better than it should be. Also that Elkie Brooks power ballad which isn't.

Not watched yet, but is that No More The Fool? I properly love it. And I seem to recall it was originally earmarked for Kim Wilde. I assume the production would have been rather different.

If anyone is old enough to remember the time this was shown you might recall that it was right in the middle of a very cold and snowy spell that saw most parts of the country with below zero temperatures for a fortnight and large parts of the country grinding to a halt. One day it was snowing so heavily that it took me over three hours to get to work (for a journey that was only about 6 or 7 miles) and when I got there I found out most people hadn't turned in, the office was closed to the public and those of us who did arrive were sent home. Two other times during January 1987 we were sent home because the water pipes in the office burst.

The chart for the week ending 17 January 1987 was notable for the sheer volume of new entries and high climbers inside the top 40. Fourteen records new to the 40 was some sort of record if I recall and it was bettered until January 1992. Definitely a case of a New Year shake up.

The single at number 95 - 'Mama Told Me' by Fantastique - had originally been released in either 1981 or 1982 but became something of a sleeper hit. I think it was 1984 when I bought the 12" but it finally made the Top 100 in late 1986 as it suddenly started to get plays in clubs and pub discos around then. It sounded like something from the early 80s too and there seemed to be no budget available for the video!

Good to see someone enjoying 'Jack Your Body'. If you go to Digital Spy you'd think it was the devils spawn... when it was a brilliant track. Most of the posters from there hate it. It has to be said though, back then it divided the nation as some of the chart followers from years earlier couldn't understand why it had charted let alone reach number 1.
 
To be honest I never did LOVE IT. But I certainly enjoyed it the context of 1987. Pump Up The Volume is my preference in terms of early house #1s.

'Pump Up The Volume' is also excellent. Which makes it all the worse that we won't get to see it at all. All appearances are Smith'd including the weeks it was at number 1 AND the Christmas Day edition...
 
Plus 'Pump Up The Volume' was the first single to be number 1 twice in 5 days. The chart reveal day moved forward from a Tuesday to a Sunday when it was at the top...
 
Next Thursday is the edition from 5 February 1987. Which means we've missed out the one from 29 January 1987 as it's another Mike Smith hosted programme...

Next Thursday is also the last episode that was presented by John Peel as part of the Top Of The Pops regular line-up and so ends an era... he would present one further edition, on 14 December 1995 but that was a ruse to get him into the studio for Michael Aspel to present him with the big red book and to say "John Peel, this is your life".
