I think my Dad thought Loadsamoney was hilarious and by proxy so did I. It is of course shit, but I guess the parody worked. I assume it was rather lost on people in the way Steptoe and Son also was.

I wonder if Benny and Bjorn chased them from £££, seeing as the great ABBA machine was still four years away.
 
*strokes chin* Loadsamoney (and Buggerallmoney) was in its original incarnation on cult Channel 4 comedy show SATURDAY/FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE (which bought the first sightings of all kinds of JOYS such as the JOAN COLLINS FAN CLUB, JO BRAND as the SEA MONSTER, CAROLINE AHERNE as SISTER MARY IMMACULATE BUT ALSO BEN ELTON) a rather BITING satire on THATCHERISM but that got SOMEWHAT LOST in a COMEDY SINGLE FORMAT
 
NARADA is NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN of I SHOULDA LOVED YA disco hit fame but FAR BETTER KNOWN as PRODUCER to the STARS of R&B most notably 80s-era ARETHA which makes it a shame that DIVINE EMOTIONS doesn't feature his trademark ZZZZZZZZZZIPPPP sound as featured on WHO'S ZOOMING WHO
 
Who's Zoomin' Who is a fucking banger. I don't recall seeing it any countdown. I presume it's not still to happen.
 
I remember being BANNED from watching this episode, because I didn't see the video to Got To Be Certain until I was about 23.
 
My Dad REALLY LIKED the Hothouse Flowers after seeing them on Eurovision. Not for me.

The King of Rock and Roll was a bit of a childhood favourite (video too) and I do like Prefab Sprout in general, though Paddy's bob was not really the best.
 
Somewhere In My Heart I always loved too. It feels rather more OTT now than I realised with the ridiculous guitar solo and all but it is still a great song. Working in a Goldmine is wonderful as well.
 
Debbie Gibson really was a load of old toss.

She always looked like a middle aged woman dressed as a teenager.
 
I had a shaped picture disc of Only In My Dreams. At the time I quite liked it but i never bothered with anything else by her. Far too saccharine.
 
We must be due New Kids On The Block soon. The US really wasn't serving it for the tweens and teens back then.

Mind you, we were giving them Bros, so we can hardly boast.

Out of the Blue was not Deborah's best moment. The verses are especially rough, even if there is something kind of sub-Carly Rae about the chorus listening now.
 
Mark Goodier's 'monstrous here too' intro was slightly odd but Steve Wright can do one with his 'Different...Interesting' reaction to the glory that is Im Nin Alu.

Him from the Hothouse Flowers scrubbed up rather better than I remembered.

I like My One Temptation and Oh Patti. Not sure about the attention that Green Gartside keeps drawing to his groin area though.
 
Did Heart never bother to do TOTP? Not even one of those special live ones 'from our studios in L.A.' - though it feels it has been a while since one of those now?

I was around at the time and I have the 7" but I can't remember the actual point of "Blue Monday 88".
 
This episode seems to be full of forgotten follow-ups; Joyce Sims, The Christians, The Primitives...buggered if I could remember any of these and I really liked The Primitives too.
 
Pump Up The Bitter being completely racist there. I assume they're all dead, given their ages. Hope so anyway.
 
Loadsamoney possibly notable for the being the only time Charlie Higson got on Top Of The Pops. Apart from that, this was dated by the end of August.

At least Wet Wet Wet didn't make any money out of beating all the fun, charm and sincerity out of "With A Little Help From My Friends".

I think this happened because the album cast its net a wee bit too wide and wasn't selling...so you had this and Hue and Cry but a hip-hop version of the title track from The 3 Wize Men as well as The Wedding Present, Sonic Youth and, of course, The Fall doing "A Day In The Life".

I watched that programme without fail - it was probably best known for breaking Ben Elton as a stand-up and for making a proper celeb out of Harry Enfield. Yeah, THANKS.
But The Dangerous Brothers were always decent and Fry and Laurie were usually good value.
