Dr Alban had a second "hit"? I'd memory-holed that. Rightly - he has all the vocal character here of a phlegmatic labrador.
 
Terence Trent D'Arby really was a heck of a performer. This track is the kind of mess that would be "genius" if, say, David Bowie had done it but is really just chucking far too much at the wall.

Just reached this. No memory of it either. The best thing about this is Somerville's t-shirt!
 
"Regret" will always be a top 10 New Order track.

I remember speculation at the time that all was not well within the group. That they didn't perform live on TOTP for this single - something they'd previously insisted upon - was considered evidence.

By the end of the year, they'd split.
 
SubSub is an interesting sliding doors moment. If their studio hadn't burned down, forcing the three musicians away from their electronic instruments and back to the guitars, bass and drums they still had, would we have had Doves?
 
Deacon Blue look like parents who took their kids to see U2 touring "Achtung Baby" and thought "hmm, we could do that". No wonder they split soon after this, they don't look remotely convinced by themselves here.
 
I had completely forgotten The Bluebells had made such an effort to make their TOTP appearances different while they were at No 1. I always like it when bands don't take themselves too seriously.

Belated congratulations to whoever decided to run the Top 40 over REM's "Everybody Hurts" video, obscuring the captions and completely ruining the intended effect.
 
I didn;t remember Inner Circle until it started. "Girl, I'm gonna make you sweat, sweat til you can't sweat no more" sounds oddly threatening now. Good choon, mind.

You should have Delicate with Des’ree coming up soon, but one of his best singles was Holding On To You in 1995. Not sure if it ever got a TOTP performance but I’ve seen a great one he did on Channel 4 at the time.

They change “I’m gonna push some more” to “make you dance some more” too. Even THEN it sounded a bit rapey, and I was 11.
 
Just catching up now. They really should have had a warning for how ridiculously hot Morten Harket was performing Dark Is The Night. Mags exuding his usual BDE behind a keyboard, and Pål was apparently also there.

Bit of a dud lead single, but who was really listening?

Yes Morten and Mags both hitting their peak there I would say.
 
WTF was that Debbie Harry performance? I wondered at the start what the man lurking in the background was there for, but I did not imagine all THAT :D
 
The Brian May solo project wasn't particularly pleasant all round, and that one really was overblown guff.

Nice of them to line up Gloria Gaynor as a palate cleanser right after. I'll even let the unnecessary shoehorned in God lyric change go.
 
Kingmaker with the single their record company told them to go away and write. This is not a million miles from the Britpop that would all over the show 2 years later. Bad timing? A decent band who lost their way too early on.
 
What a strange move for Elton to just stand there on his own, dancing like a haunted puppet in a storm.

The performance they showed this week of Ruined in a Day was not especially inspiring.
 
I do not remember the Jade song. It is a bit I Wanna Sex You Up, but certainly no Don't Walk Away or Every Day of the Week.

I do love a bit of Pray. They seem to have given up on getting Barlow to join in with the dance moves and left him to frug awkwardly at the front.
 
I'm going to get myself up to speed when I;m off work in a week or so...let's nab what's due to expire.

I actually have every respect for Andy McClusky/OMD but this song is so unmemorable that I couldn't remember it and he looks way to smug for such a bland tune. He's not that far away from chucking it in and getting Atomic Kitten together here, is he?
 
1993 seems to be dominated by unmemorable material from very well know artists.
 
Well, that episode was easily flipped though...no wonder I was getting into Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Moonshake etc at this time.

Same. I was never a Bon Jovi fan but they were at least memorable, right up to Keep The Faith. That song just dribbled past my ears.
 
Ah, Saint Etienne. Great to see them but a shame it wasn't the imperishable 'other' A side, Hobart Paving.

The 12" had 2 Aphex Twin remixes which was a pleasing crossover of my interests at the time. Still is.
 
That performance of This Is It was such a joy. The better than expected vocals, the scrub the buttocks dance and the random big 'REEEEEAAAAAL thing' at the end :disco:

Julian bobbing around next to Tony Dortie at the end was slightly awkward though.
 
What did Jason Donovan have on the BBC to still be getting 'exclusive' performances on TOTP in 1993?

And the Pray video is 100 times more iconic than the two in studios we got previously.
 
Brett Anderson with no top under his jacket. So Young is such a great song. They do look a little awkward here tho'. Bernard Butler in his own world.
 
Sorry, as clever as this version of "Shout" is using 'Peter Gunn' as the backing, the L*lu association is just too strong.
