I remember exactly nothing about Dog Eat Dog but it stinks of a major label trying to create a boy-band Beastie Boys. Bloody awful.

I kind of miss the post Xmas lull that would get a few oddities into the charts. It was fun seeing Dubstar in the top 20, even if it did create a misplaced sense that there could be more.
 
My memory tells me that George Michael's 1996 comeback was a Very Big Deal Indeed and that radio was unimpressed with Jesus To A Child because of its length. It sounds very good today - graceful, unforced. It's not "A Different Corner" but that's an unfair metric I suppose, like asking every Paul McCartney single to be Eleanor Rigby.

The Diana Ross Survive cover was utterly pointless. And that jacket was HIDEOUS.
 
I have no recollection of Judy Cheeks but what became of Lisa I'Anson? Did she not piss off the wrong person or something equally Popbitchy?
 
Early signs of what became the trance explosion seen in early 96.

Of course Children was a fucking mammoth hit and the set ball rolling. It's probably as iconic as any 90s dance track.
 
I'd forgotten Dreadzone had a hit...Big Audio Dynamite's original rhythm section. Trying to think of any other occasions where a rhythm section have had a hit with more than one band.
 
"Spaceman" must be the biggest bait-and-switch in pop history. I don't mind the actual song, as it goes but it would never have been a hit without the fast bit being in a jeans ad. I wonder what Jaz Mann is doing now...
 
Streaming has robbed us of the soundalike 2nd single, the Dead Cat Bounce that gave us things like this totally forgettable Bucketheads record. So, not all bad then.
 
I think this is the hardest run of episodes since they started repeating them from 1976 or whenever it was. No doubt an age thing at least in part.
 
Yes these episodes have been hard work, I am a few behind.

Just watched the one with L*l* presenting, and bizarrely recommending the Saw Doctors live experience.
 
I remember 1996 as a bit of a dismal year...a lot of Cast and Ocean Colour Scene and such cobblers. Dadrock won over Britpop and the results were grim. We have the successful return of Manic Street Preachers to come, that's a plus.
 
Mind you, we do get Gary Barlow's first solo single being tipped off #1 by Spice Girls. That starts a new era, albeit one that doesn't completely kick in until 1997.
 
I think the fact that we've just watched one from 1988 with Im Nin'Alu doesn't do 1996 any favours.
 
John Reid's crushed velvet suit should be in the British Museum. Next to the statue of Edward Colston with all the graffiti on it.
 
Lulu and Shed Seven on the same stage - this run of episodes is severely testing my patience.
 
Trying to think what I was into early 96...was deep in the Nurse With Wound hole as well as the Aphex/Autechre/uZiq etc scene. Stereolab and their ilk too. Blur, of course - I was keeping the faith. Super Furry Animals can't be far away, I think.

I was trying to remember who was responsible for Goldbug; had to Google, it was one of the Beatmasters. Sounds like it all fell to bits in lawsuits and intergroup hate. Deserved.

For some reason, I think you're right but that maybe entirely Manics related from me. I'll leave that until the actual episodes tho'.

Were Upside Down the band who had the documentary about them? i.e. the prototype Popstars? Why do I think they were forced to change their name or something?
 
Skunk Anansie - never entirely my bag musically but impossible not to respect. They had so much shit from racists and misogynists in the "metal" industry (99% of it focused on Skin, of course), but they stood their ground and kept their integrity.
 
3T - difficult to take a lusty love song from a bunch of 14 year olds. No wonder the industry was full of nonces.
