I wonder how many viewers they lost during the oh-so-futuristic camera effects during Mirrorball due to thinking their television was on the blink :D
 
As great at as early 1999 was for dance, Mirrorball was one that left me cold. I'd have much rather seen the ridiculous Supercar.
 
The decision to put the UK national finalists on the end of TOTP is single handedly responsible for my subsequent Eurovision obsession :D imagine what my latent autism could’ve latched onto otherwise! Still think Sister Sway were robbed even if I like Precious, I’d forgotten how bland the demo version of Say It Again was too.
 
Did someone suddenly say to Dru Hill right times up? It seemed to stop suddenly. It took me a while to figure out what was on Sisqo’s mic - I thought he was carrying a water bottle.

I was too young to remember the original Good Life so will always prefer the 1999 version I heard first. I randomly remember them performing it on Live And Kicking of all places. It was a nice bit of warm summerness in winter!

Please stop with the Mel C and Bryan Adams crotch dancing.

National Express has always been a fun song. Probably deserved of Divine Comedy’s only Top 10. He’s also looking rather good nowadays

Leilani felt very much a marketing team meeting to come up with a new popstar concept. Which is a shame as she was rather wonderfully random. I mean has the word boobies ever been sung on TOTP since? Where were all the ironing board covers?

The Armand dancers when first seen backstage I assumed were for Leilani.
 
I think this was it for M People? I quite like Dreaming much more than their early stuff(!).

FAKE HEV from the Honeyz on backing dancer duties with Mirror ball. I think she was one of Juliet Roberts dancers the other week. Did anyone else’s TV seemed to stall like it was buffering badly? I assume the producers behind the track were the ones say a bit creepily on the couch?

Yay to Soulsearcher and Thea Austin with her ribbon twirling. What’s with the backing singers being behind a curtain? Ace Of Base performed on that stage - Linn was probs furious that that option wasn’t there for her.

Will Smith doing an intro for Tatyana Ali was cute (though tbh he was no stranger to an intro clip for TOTP). Shame there was only one single after this.

Maria - what a song. Am I right that Blondie was totally written off at this point without the awe that heritage acts with no hits for some time get nowadays? I can’t figure out if Debbie is miming or doing a very good vocal? Regardless, I’m enjoying her facial expressions!

OMG Precious! What is this demo version?! Queen Jenny Frost with her first appearance.

Did we have a show with NO repeats?
 
Oh poor Supercar not appearing. And I guess the flop follow on track that was basically the same didn’t appear as it didn’t go Top 40
 
Leilani was signed to ZTT, which was much more of an underground/indie record label at that point. I think the entire thing was intentionally absurdist and tongue in cheek.

Madness Thing obviously slaps, but even if it had been bigger than it was, they had nothing to follow it up with. Her second single Do You Want Me was very weak, and her last effort Flying Elvis was enjoyably kitsch but far too camp and weird to be a hit.


 
That was a good hit for Thea Austin. She must have expected more when she worked with the Haddaway producers earlier on in the decade.



Sounds more like mid 90s Snap! Obviously I still love it.
 
Poor Leilani only having 130 monthly listeners on Spotify. Hopefully those numbers will surge now!

Wasn’t she on some reality show in the last few years? Survivor?
 
Boy You Knock Me Out is such a lovely summery little bop, perhaps not best served by a January release.

I was always surprised that even with the Will Smith connection it didn't do a thing in America.
 
Other than as a vehicle to elevate Jenny Frost to her destined greatness, I don't really understand why Precious were ever a five piece? Only one of them sang! :basil:
 
I wasn't at all against the acts charting further down getting an appearance, particularly if they were big album or live acts - even if it did smart when it was at the expense of one of your favourites charting higher. I had far more of an issue with the same acts being on multiple times.

Yea, that was Lou Barlow and one of his chums (John Davis?). Propelled upwards by their music being used in the film 'Kids'...in fact they may have done the whole soundtrack. Decent but I liked the combination of Lou and Jason Lowenstein - the latter's songs were a great counterpoint and, once he found his feet, often the quiet highlight of any 'Doh album.
 
I know Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz got to number 1 because it was featured in an advert but I can't for the life of me remember what it was or anything about it. I don't think it was Levi's.
 
Until You Saved My Life (written by Flip & Fill no less) remains a track of life :disco: not convinced by the routine though :D
 
Who is the man standing behind Kate Thornton just before Sister Sway? He looks familiar and is surely too good looking to be a member of the public.
 
What a truly insufferable performance of Tender from Blur! :D And that's one of their better songs!

Still outraged DJ Sakin, Cevin Fisher and Loleatta Holloway and Loop Da Loop never got an airing on Top of the Pops.

Dj Sakin got the awwww from me today on seeing it in the chart run down.

That first episode was very male heavy until Sister Sway came in. Not sure it was Flip and Fill. Lee Montevade was the L in LMC (and did Dannii’s So Under Pressure). Sister Sway was an AATW release.

Did they actually show a face shot of The Moffatts drummer? Of course it would be this week that their album came off digital platforms! Next Of Kin was a hit off a bop even if all three could have done with a haircut. Odd it only fell four places the next week, but then a while 20 places the week after.

I didn’t release Cevin was pronounced Seh - vin rather than Kevin.

Blur went on and on. Barenaked ladies guy looked a bit fit. Who was the gay in the tight shirt behind Kate backstage?
 
Hurrah to Lucid making an appearance. The singer had a bit of character.

I like the Whitney song but I dunno there was something about that performance that didn’t seem to click.

Alberta rocking up to do Yo Yo Boy part 2. She’d tried for Eurovision the year before. This track didn’t seem to get released at all. Not even a compilation!
 
Oddly the clip shown in in the first episode wasn’t the DJ Sakin video (there was one, it was medieval themed).

The second episode clip is from the German TOTP so enjoy!
 
Oh I much much prefer dreary original Runaway to the Tin Tin Out version that charted. The remix stripped out all of the melodrama to leave wafer-thin supermarket music.

I do recall there being a lot of hype around the Hanson clones, so it makes sense TOTP went all in on securing them, only to be caught out when they flopped and a DJ Sakin went hard instead. The Hanson clones were both rubbish, but I'd pick the Moffatts over Next of Kin.

The days when Dame Lauryn Hill actually turned up to things :disco:
 
God I adore Erase/Rewind. Despite charting higher, it feels quite forgotten compared to My Favourite Game.

Can someone like Billie Eilish bring it back to the public consciousness please?

Tbh im bored of the Whitney performance too. With all these repeats I do wonder if there were pre records that just got bumped to show Blur again?

Where was Venga cowboy? Made Venga sailor look a bit spare wheel given he didn’t have a mic.

Betcha Can’t Wait is an ok song and whilst kudos to E-17 for going live, they made it dreary and the dancing was awks. That’s their last appearance which feels a bit sad for a 90s mainstay.

The Corrs did they do two performances as I swear that was the Tin Tin Out remix.

Yay to Cher giving us two performances. I tried to spot the shiny gay from the background of Believe to see if he was there but alas.

Kelly Jones is hot, but the song is too dreary to get played two weeks in a row.
