Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love + “drop dead” (1 Viewer)

That's a bit soon, no? I guess with Drop Dead already going to number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic means they can move onto single number 2.

Drop dead is stalling a bit at radio so maybe they are panicking but still think they should have just dropped this with the album and rolled it out then on June 12th with a video etc. They didn’t seem to learn from the last campaign where they released both get him back and bad idea right within a month of each other and it was a bit of a mess.

GREAT song and video. it's completely undeniable by the time the middle 8 comes in and it all builds and swirls. she's so good at that.

I really like it, the middle eight is the best thing she’s done in a long time. It’s also the first song she’s released that feels like it couldn’t have been on the first album/a progression for her.

I’m sure it will need some sort of Happier Than Ever edit though for the Gen Zeers

I think the video is fab but I'm not totally sold on the song yet. It's fine. Hopefully it'll grow on me.

Yep, a couple of days on and it's still doing nothing for me really. All the elements are in place, but I just find it a bit insipid and 'haven't-we-heard-all-this-before'.

This is brilliant and the music video is really charming.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility but I don’t think it will hold well enough for a #1 debut. It is tracking better than “bad idea right”, which was the second single off the last album. But it doesn’t have a radio deal either.

It's definitely a grower, I wasn't completely sold on it at first, but really like it now.

I've read that Olivia is on course for her 5th number 1 single in the UK.
Can POP! confirm?

Drop Dead and The Cure are both fantastic, my favourite things she's done to date.

Just finished my first listen to the album. It'll take a few more listens, but it's sounding strong. Immediate standouts for me: expectations, stupid song, maggots for brains.

Weirdly I'm kind of struggling with this album now. It sounded encouraging on first listen, but it's somehow managing to sound less good with each listen. Drop Dead still towers over everything else for me. It's such a pure pop adrenaline rush that I felt moved her sound forward a bit, whereas almost everything else just sounds like the usual teen pop/rock with forgettable melodies.

I think I'll give it a breather for a while and come back to it.

whereas I skipped Drop Dead on first play through (ongoing). Stupid Song is great.

Stupid song is great, listening to the rest now. Honeybee intro and melody reminds me of “somebody else”, is it a sample?

expectations was a bit of a late album curveball. Brilliant though.

Those were probably my top three too. u + me = <3 is up there as well, but I really enjoyed it all and went right back to listen again, which I don't think was the case with her previous albums.

Love that one too! It’s literally all clicking bigtime today.

I bought the HMV pink vinyl alternative cover today. The sticker said “pretty sad pink vinyl, cover + poster”. I was handed a poster when paying for it. Is that the poster they mean? Or is the 12”x12” picture inside of her with the chainsaw meant to be the poster? There’s no credits or lyrics at all in it either though, which is so weird, as the CD version has them.

Confused.

Yes, this is an excellent pop album.

Cigarette Smoke is a devastating closer :disco:

Expectations is so Material Girl-coded sonically, especially towards the end with the male voice repeating what she sings.

Genius.
