His album Pony is just TOO GOOD. Sort of male-Lana meets Roy Orbison meets Twin Peaks Roadhouse.

Hope To Die is a personal fave, but the whole shebang is so consistent.

My only quibble is that the voice can verge on the musical theatre side of life. I’d prefer something a bit more Scott Walker-ish (Scott 1 - 4 era rather than the higher register of the later years which never quite did it for me)

I love that Orville seems to have become one of the big Halloween hits of the 2019 costume season

Anyway, saw him live earlier this week and it was just MAGNIFICENT. Even if you don’t care for his music or voice, you can’t help but be sucked in by the live show - it’s SO MUCH FUN. He could never follow this album up and be touring it for years to come.

In regards to his voice, it took me a couple of listens to get used to it but I love it now. It’s all part of the persona (including his Desperate Dan speaking voice when in Orville character ). It all adds to the delicious melodrama on a track like Hope To Die

It's quite light and simple and along the lines of noted anthem 'Hope To Die'
King of releasing light and simple music when people really need to hear it

He's also signed to Columbia Records now, though still with Sub Pop - so I imagine they are gonna go heavy on festival bookings for next couple of years and we can probably expect some DIRE COLLABS I really hope they don't try to make him make his own Old Town Road..!

Fancy IS a cover isn't it? Just an Orville reinterpretation of the Bobbie Gentry track - I'm not sure if he's changed some of the lyrics?

Show Pony is cute, but I can totally see why it's an EP rather than material for a new album. The two singles are the highpoints, along with Fancy.
I'm not SURE on the Shania Twain duet It sounds a bit like they decided to collaborate before having written the song and sort of just winged it It's a bit corny. Maybe it will grow.

Anyway, add in the Diplo intro and Smalltown Boy and this is a really tasty treat

I kind of wish they'd pushed the song a bit further? It's halfway between a full on country hoedown and Orville's more sedate normal stuff. They should have gone a bit more balls to the walls with it tbh.

I'm AMAZED they managed to get Shania to show up for a video shoot. I thought she was a borderline recluse these days, although I'm hardly a Shania EXPERT

However, Dead Of Night is probably the only track I love as a song only. For most of his material it needs the whole package (and what a package) to come off for me.

are his three best songs individually IMO, but I really love the Pony album as a cohesive whole.

I almost sort of wish he’d just released it as a curio concept album and disappeared off into the ether again (but also very happy he didn’t!)

He’s quite a marmite artist I’ve found - some people just CANNOT GEL with the voice or style of music.
