Panic buying Thursday.

I’m on nights so I’m just scrounging around all day

Today is my last day off work until Christmas Day itself :(

Currently waiting for Royal Mail to deliver my Sophie Ellis-Bextor wine at some point in the next couple of hours (thanks to whoever mentioned this being a thing a couple of weeks ago), then I should pop out to get a couple of last minute selection boxes for the nieces.

The world is already properly Christmas mad. Tesco was fucking HELL this morning. Genuinely heard someone debating if two bags of 15p sprouts were enough for four people and deciding on another "just in case" that will INEVITABLY end up in the bin.

Going to the gym, feel like its a pointless battle at this point.

Yeah, I've just been out and it is much more hectic even than yesterday. The use-by dates must have hit the 25th.

I've overbought, I admit that, but I also know CATEGORICALLY everything will be used before it spoils somehow- even if it's frozen/ made into soups. The wastage drives me INSANE. And this trend for making veg cheaper and cheaper at Christmas is just making things worse. It doesn't NEED to be that price and I see now they're all competing- Tesco announce 15p, so Morrisons are 10p and now today Asda and Aldi have gone 8p for bags of veg. At what point does it become free? Fuck knows what this does to the growers as well...

Because a) no one values it and b) the people who suffer are the people at the end of the line, not fucking TESCO.

In what WORLD does that have anything to do with supporting "THE PROLES" and their quest for veg ONE DAY A YEAR, Comrade?

Why are things being cheaper a BAD thing? :D

It's a marketing stunt. So the person buying the veg at 10p a bag is probably saving £3-£5. Which for some, yes, absolutely significant, but for most, is not. So en masse, Tesco and the supermarkets have bought those vegetables in forced agreements with their suppliers at a much cheaper rate than they normally would. It makes no long term economical sense.

And we don't "pay through the nose" for veg as it is, generally. It's UNDERpriced if anything. The issue is the way wealth is ringfenced, not the cost of a LETTUCE.

I mean 10p veg paid for by appropriate subsidies and taxes on e.g. junk food WOULDN'T BE A BAD THING ACTUALLY

Yeah, but ENTIRELY different question to the one I'm talking about here...

Loss-leaders by major retailers always ends up screwing over the manufacturer/grower/independent retailer. The lowest price ends up being "the goal" for the customer and anything else is "a rip off" because if it was 10p that day why isn't it 10p today etc. The retailers will just sell other stuff, the 'producer' is always fucked at the end of it.

Exactly and it was the case in the ridiculous "Value/Economy" range wars of the 90s/00s when you could buy baked beans for 8p. The retailer doesn't carry (the majority) of the "loss" at all.

I’ve just eaten a fuck load of festive sweet stuff. Officially the season

My new washer's spin is so quiet I thought I'd accidentally turned the air-fryer on. The air-fryer is louder.

I love it, it does a 60 minute 60 wash, doesn't connect to wifi and the only thing I can change is the water temperature on certain programmes. I didn't use any of the fancy stuff on the old (expensive) washer but this one must be made for old people because it has a big chunky dial to select the big-writing programmes and, unlike the previous washer, you can turn the dial clockwise or anti-clockwise.

@ZenReindeer it doesn't have a jingle or even a beep or any annoying electronic noises at all, it just stops and the word END appears in the window.

I don't understand why anyone would waste sprouts, I adore them. Last week I had a bowl of stir fried sprouts and chestnuts for dinner. Nothing else.

FULL PRICED SPROUTS I MIGHT ADD.

Resentfully on the train to the work Christmas do after having a FANTASTIC week NOT seeing my colleagues.

I love a sprout. I just come from the generation that had no idea how to prepare them so just boiled them to mush. A roasted sproat or 12, that's where it's at.

OT: I’m sat in a restaurant I booked at 18:30, having arrived in the area at 17:30 as the other two people said “let’s meet for a drink at the Christmas market thing first”, entirely alone, one person having just said “sorry, just finished work, leaving now”, from Southampton half an hour away, and the other one claiming to be “in traffic”.

GOD I FUCKING HATE PEOPLE.

I believe I said this last year as well, but sprout gratin sounds amazing.
