It’s quite good fun but it always makes me want to play this instead ( *shoehorns in an earlier Sam Fox hit).

I think it may have been discussed some in a thread for Spellbound, but it's worthy of its own thread.

I love it but the VMA perf didn't land AT ALL. I think they should have kept this as a fun for Europe single and released "My Foolish Heart" in America. This broke her string of top ten hits.
 
The VMA performance was CAREER ENDING. She’d been getting loads of acccusations of not singing on her own records and a backing singer, Yvette Marine if I remember, went on Arsenio and said the vocals were hers. This performance was supposed to be the proof and it was a DISASTER. Even the vocal lessons she clearly had by the next album weren’t enough and public opinion of her has crashed…
 
^That’s right, it went to court. Marine was claiming her vocal was mixed with Abdul’s and passed off as one lead vocal but the court rejected the claims. However, in the aftermath of Milli Vanilli the damage was done.
 
There’s an American version of the Freakytrigger blog reviewing every US #1 that is currently on the early 90s Paula/Janet era. Obviously this isn’t directly featured but they’re pretty interesting.

I just Wiki’d her discography and her UK chart history was more spotty than I remember.

My Love is For Real deserved to be much bigger on both sides of the Atlantic, even if the parent album was a little bit of a dud. It’s still one of my favorites of hers. “Let’s just have Paula do the speaking bits and call Ofra Haza for the VOX”
 
She was never as big in the UK as she was in the US. It still upsets me that "Cold Hearted" wasn't the three month number one it deserved to be and missed the top 40 entirely.

I read only reviews for Taylor Dayne, Tiffany, Gloria Estefan and Debbie Gibson and he seems to hate everything based on what I read. After he used the word gloopy for the 4th review in a row I stopped reading.

It does seem a rather conservative rating scale. But freakytrigger has always been that way too. Blondie got two rare 10/10s with Heart of Glass and Call Me. Their other two got 9s.

Reading the Tiffany reviews now. They are SO backhanded even when vaguely complimentary. On I Think We’re Alone Now:

That melody pairs delightfully with those lyrics, and the rawness of Tiffany’s voice helps things. I’ve read most of the 70s ones and all the comments and they’re much more positive
 
It sounds like the work of a producer noodling in the studio when they didn't have a song ready to go.
 
This thread made me read Paula’s wiki, which led me down the rabbit hole of the conspiracy theories of her lying about surviving that 1992 plane crash she has recounted a bunch of times. How bizarre
