Phoebe Bridgers - Lost Weekend (New album August 2026)

Odd that we never got another single and the album's out on Friday. The reviews so far are incredible.

She didn't need to, I suppose. Excitement for this one was serious as soon as it was announced.

So I've been listening to Lost Weekend, and as with her other albums, I'm struggling. The production is good(but not very different to dozens of other US alternative artists), her vocals are fine(being generous), the lyrics are good(nothing special), but melodically it just washes over me. The same hushed, bland, lifeless vocal delivery on almost everything doesn't help. I've only ever liked a handful of her songs though, so I can't say I'm surprised. I'll be listening more though, as maybe it'll be a grower.

Is that her thing though? Are her fans mostly about the lyrics and not so much about the melodies? They're dull, flat and meandering. I loved Lost Boys right away, but noticed that a lot of her fans were lukewarm on it, yet for me it has a gorgeous, classic melody. Or are the melodies actually gorgeous and I should just shut the fuck up and keep listening? At the moment it's genuinely sounding like a rather sophisticated spoof of what an alternative artist sounds like in 2026.

Compounding my less-than-thrilled response to the album is that I've to attend a listening event for it tomorrow at 10:30am. I'm already jittery at the thought at having to nod enthusiastically as this pretentious bore of an album is played while I stand in a record shop for an hour. But at least I get a "zodiacal vinyl" for my troubles.

Of course a week later and I’m in love with this album.

That seems to be most people's experience with it. On first play, I found it quite scrappy and oddly sewn together. Then the songs started to cohere and the sound design and production made sense - the album is intended to document a period where the rug was pulled under her at least three times in quick succession. Hence some songs are pitched at a whisper, others blare out of the speakers, songs change completely part way through, there are a lot of sudden stops. Form meets function. I must have listened it about 15 times now and I strongly recommend a listen while reading the lyrics because once the narrative lands, the album makes perfect sense.

Mind you, I'm not sure I needed the mental image of Bo Burnham in the shower.

I keep going back to this as well, though not in the double digits yet! Haunted and As Above are my current favourites.

I found it didn’t completely hit on first listen too, particularly the times when songs seemed to be left hanging were a little irritating. The section about two thirds of the way through when the track lengths drop and things are less fully formed is still my least favourite patch.

I see that The Governor's Waltz is leading the Spotify play count, above the playlisted single I Can't Wait. It is a little more straightforward but I assume it is at least partly due to the chatter about the subject matter.

Yeah, it seems to be just Internet Drama, is she dissing Gracie Abrams etc. Bridgers' lyrics are so diaristic that there's no plausible deniability but she's not doing any interviews so the usual suspects are in force speculating on something that is actually quite clearly laid out.
