Pop memories of 2003

Doing the next of my One More Time club nights (for any moopsters after a night out for when music was good) a week on Saturday. 2003 is the year.

What were your memories from then? Probably the last year any pure pop act was successfully launched.

Following the shrine to Diana (for 1997) and Posh V Sophie EB chart battle (for 2000) I am struggling to think of some appropriate nonsense for 2003, so if anyone has any ideas!

One More Time heads back to 2003. Reality TV acts were all over the charts from Popstars' Girls Aloud, Liberty X, Cheeky Girls and err One True Voice to Pop Idol's Will Young, Gareth Gates, Darius, Sarah Whatmore, Zoe Birkett and Rosie Ribbons and Fame Academy's David Sneddon, Sinead Quinn...

Milkshake, Stuck, Hole In The Head, Ka-Ching, Slow, Crazy In Love, No Good Advice, Breathe and Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex all scream big pop energy in what felt like a super hip hop and r'n'b heavy year.

Also: "Superstar" being the slow burner hit and TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF, of course.

Cheeky’s putting fun back in the charts.

Milkshake didn’t hit the UK charts till 2004 though
 
XTM & DJ Chucky feat Annia turning an old tale into AN ODYSSEY with their take on "Fly On The Wings Of Love" :disco:

(even if their cover technically came out in 2001, didn't chart in the UK until 2003!)
 
on the note of #11 singles: Shania Twain - Thank You Baby two weeks earlier stalled at #11, being held out of the #10 position by Speedway - Save Yourself
 
2003 is Moloko's "Statues" for me.

Christina, Justin, Kelis and Missy.

Almost everything else was dance music.

Love the strings in that one (Shania not Speedway).

I have no recollection of Shake Ya Tailfeather and Too Far Gone is the more deserving hit.

I think XTM might have been released in Spain back in 2000! Mercury Records Serious Records imprint losing all credibility.

In fact Serious just rehashed the footage from the defunct Mercury label Manifesto’s single Love and Affection by Mr Pink for Plummet’s Damaged.

There wasn’t much in the way of a big summer dance hit in 2003. A load of also rans but the nearest we seemed to get was XTM or Ultrabeat. Rap was heavily on the rise.

Well late 2002 (and through into 2003) saw Love Inc take a four year old song into the top 10 for a month (You’re A Superstar).

I get there being slight delays on stuff coming over to the UK but not sure what on earth prompted NuLife to sign a four year old track (that sounded dated by 2002), even more so that they launched Love Inc with a vinyl only release of one of their random Canadian singles which obviously tanked yet still decided to go ahead with Superstar (which they were rewarded).
 
2003 was the year that dance music ran screaming from the charts and reset itself. 2000 - 2002 had seen some great massive dance hits but it was also overkill. It was time to start again.
 
But yes it was partially because nothing could withstand the R&B and pop-rap steamroller.
 
NZ was a really good place to grow up for music cuz we got equal parts of the best of UK/Europe and the best of USA.

Probably because AATW and the like killed it with six thousand “eurotrance” covers of 80s hits. Oddly having kick started all that in 2002, Kelly Llorenna was surprisingly absent from the charts bar one minor N Trance feature.

Pretty much. Drove itself into the ground with ever increasing commerciality. Oddly surviving in certain British local scenes, including Liverpool ironically, where Scouse House remains an enduring menace.

I think Hed Kandi survived a bit longer, until MoS bought that too, and killed it off by over commercialising it.

There was some GREAT deep house around in 2003, but it was all very much underground again.
 
Remember when Kosheen reinvented themselves as Texas and it worked for exactly one single?

 
Absolutely gutted I can’t go to this - the 1998 one was amazing and I’ve kept missing them since. :(

But even then there was a glaring omission.

A bit of Phixx would presumably go down well.

Anything from State of Mind if you can pretend it's not Holly Valance.

Pop really fell off a cliff that year
