I don't think I've worn one since high school. No disrespect to R TROOPS, but the annual hysteria over the poppies always strikes me as ridiculous, and something 95% of people pretend to care about far more than they actually do.
 
I go through phases. I'll wear one, in spite of the right wing demand to do so. The poppy origin story - WW1 was phenomenally foul. I just think of all of the people I know who have died too young, if they knew they'd be honoured, 100 years later by strangers, but snubbed by some because of future politics - well frankly that's a dick move.
 
I respect what they stand for but not the people who enforce wearing them, so I don’t bother.

Also I don’t want little holes in my good jackets from pinning them on.

Did the soldiers of WW1 die for that? From my understanding it was defence of nation states, alliances, nationalism and other rivalries. A pointless war.

Think you're mixing up WW1 and WW2.

Either way I'll make my choice, based on how I feel, rather than the tedious culture wars. I'm not defending the right wing, or war, just joining in a unified national mourning of those we have lost.

Next year I might not.

Sorry, yes, the symbol of the poppy itself comes from WW1, so in that regard you're right.

The Royal British Legion however intends it to represent all conflicts from WW1 onwards, including WW2.
 
I've found it easier to not wear one than get into conversations around alternatives. I'll stop and fall silent on 11/11 because my grandfather fought in WW2 and his brother was killed right in front of him but the culture and discourse around it all is just awful now, and has been for several years. "Never again", we said. And look at it all.
 
I donned a white one of these about a decade ago and genuinely copped so much vitriol from randoms in pubs and on the street that I decided NEVER AGAIN. I get that others who believe in the white poppy are subject to criticisms about not knowing their history (tho I do have an undergrad in the subject) or being ungrateful to those who fought for our freedoms. But I think there's something particularly off about the optics of a Brown guy wearing one of those things that churns up the latent skepticism-of-the-Other amongst certain groups of Brits and sends it spewing out in all sorts of toxicity that's frankly not worth the effort. And I was over SIX THOUSAND MILES from British shores the year I did this.

So I'll just stay a distant traitor rather than expressing any alternate sentiments because it makes life MUCH EASIER.

It's virtue signalling in the same way "clapping for the NHS" whilst we pay them FUCK ALL suddenly became a thing. It's all distracting from the REAL issues that are actually going on.

This is essentially my take on it and I've never been accosted for not wearing one 🤷‍♂️
 
I don't think I've worn an actual poppy since school, but I think I bought a pin badge at work at some point.

The trains that I drive have poppies on the front at this time of year (and poppy-shaped markings at all other times)
 
I used to wear one years ago but tbh it was probably more for the aesthetic than the symbolism :)
 
I suppose this can here as well. I hope everyone's remembering are brave boys today on the anniversary of them liberating France by running INTO the sea. 🫡

 
It seems to be thoroughly drummed into my generation and older.

I'll wear one if I'd get shit for not doing so, but that's basically never these days except maybe out with parents on the day or something.

I sacked it off the same way as formal wear at work - just quietly stopped and watched my peers also quietly stop when I got away with it.

I've never regularly worn a poppy. I think i've purchased them in the past but i don't bother wearing. Do they still just sell them with PINS or have they upgraded to something that actually stays on your clothes these days?
