I believe they ditched "Run" in the States in favor of THIS bland mess. There were also plenty of better single options on the album than this ("Take a Bow" for one).

I remember REALLY hating this at the time and being FURIOUS that it was a single. Not sure why now but here it is anyway

I was going to post this too and add:



JUST when she got radio back on board with "Obsessed" she released THAT. It's as if Tommy Mottola was still calling the shots.
 


Don't get me wrong; the album version is possibly their best song ever. But it was a terrible idea to butcher it into a single edit.
 
basically EVERY Leona single post-Run would qualify for this.

I would have been inclined to agree in 2003, tbh, but I could not have imagined a "Hollywood" or "Love Profusion" etc released in its place. It all needed to happen in order for the stars to align with COADF, I think.

No it's not and even discounting it to 99 cents or whatever didn't change its fortunes.

Original Firecracker version - FINE, no problem. The single version was a WTF HOT MESS moment and not in a good way.
 
American Life is an incredible song and she should've been applauded for having the balls to go for it. (she should've had the balls not to pull the video, though.)

Yah but still awful single choice particularly with that stupid flags video. Had she stuck to her guns (ha!) and released the video then the grating non-commercial musical aspect would have been understood in CONTEXT. But in the end we ended up with the worst of BOTH worlds - awful music video to go with a non-commercial song - i.e. HORRIBLE SINGLE CHOICE.
 
Inexplicably released in America as her third single after two reasonable hits, when she had Always Come Back To Your Love and Body 2 Body in the wings. Killed her career stone dead. (Though obviously it wouldn't have survived long with her TERMINAL LAZINESS anyway)

I don't disagree with that but it was a horrible single choice and killed off the post-Music momentum (although to be fair 'Die Another Day' had already started a mini backlash...)

Ah yes, I'll agree with that. She needed to double down, but did not which felt very un-Madonna... then we got the GAP ad and English Roses. :eyes:

what damage did it actually do? X sold great, she followed it up with a huge smash and got a third "minor hit" too. it was just immediately forgotten.

What would you have released in its place? I'm not saying it was a great single, but I think any song off My December would have underperformed. "One Minute" is arguably the most commercial / GP friendly track there, but still feels very SLIGHT compared to the blockbusters off its predecessor...

For Kelly I'd add "I Do Not Hook Up". She clearly had a gun held to her head at this point, and it was radio friendly enough, but I'd have gone straight to "Already Gone", or done "Don't Let Me Stop You" if they wanted something uptempo for single #2.

I always found the American mindset of being all "we can't have more than two bangers in a row, we need the obligatory BALLAD" quite annoying and jarring. Sure they wanted that A/C Hit but it wasn't always necessary :zombie:
