Pop culture about 9-10 years ago was strangest to me (and I was at highschool ) also whenever Love Island was new and I heard about children watching it too.

Spreading our collective wings into wider culture, I think the 2010s are going to stand up historically as such a low period culturally (despite it being a second golden age of TV).

Thankfully we've moved on, but the era of fidget spinners, YOLO, the Kardashians, Minion memes and flash mobs really was cringe at the time and even more ick to look back on.
