POST YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS FROM 1999

As someone who hates altered/sped up voices, this is somehow the GREATEST TRANCE SONG EVER MADE (possibly)

[funky]

1999 was probably dance music's commercial peak, and a lot of great gems got lost in the shuffle

[Shoat]

The 3 Jay's out of that lot

Released 1 January 1999:

Released 31 December 1999:

Some songs really did take a while to cross over back then. Lucky Star wasn’t a hit until 2001.

Similarly, this is also a 1999 track although I don’t think many people consider it as such (hit number one in 2000)

[Agneeta]

This went top 20 in 1999 and then top 10 in 2000

[Shoat]

Top 20 in 1999, but the remix wouldn't peak until 2004

No recollection of the 2004 re-release!

Off the back of a lot of car advert usage - because who doesn't associate BOOTY with Renault Clios?

This Belinda Carlisle time travel

I'm sorry but this version is awful I've never heard it before in my life. I owned the CD single and it was definitely not there.

This was the version that was on the UK releases and radio. The version you posted only came out in the UK on the album (sorry the erasure of the hit version in the streaming age is a bugbear of mine!!)

ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)

ATB became king of import in 1999, but the low-charting import version would ultimately usurp a huge UK #1 hit.

1999 is my favourite year for music! It was the year I launched my club night One More Time with and the year I ended it with.

Whilst the music was maybe not as happy and cheery as 1998, there was still a fun and scorching hotness to the music before I felt serious music came back and then single sales declined. Just about all the pop faves (bar Spice Girls and Louise) seemed to have something there. I also loved the trance music that emerged.

Loads of great tracks put out here. The 3 Jays was one I discovered and loved whilst prepping for One More Time. Always loved the one two of ATB and Alice Deejay. We saw Thunderbugs launch and spectacularly crash, Steps were in shiny full force, we even had kids bops by Lolly and Marvin and Tamara.

Nonsense by DJ Sakin and Adam Rickitt too. In terms of my other picks…

Whilst I much prefer the tighter 1999 edit, I always find it odd that they never used one of the remixes for this re-release (yes that’s Sadie Frost)

The UK remix of ATB’s second hit smashes the original

Still sounds razor sharp!

I don’t think k this video is official

Once mistyped this as Diving Faeces - managed to sneak its way onto the best selling NOW of all time

Got to love a song with the vocal Wooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhyyyyaaaaayyyyy!!!!

Sadly cancelled in the UK

Desperate to get this on streaming!

Much better than On The Beach in my opinion…. Even though it’s all moot as their singles were all heavily remixes for the UK!

Not actually self promoting but more if anyone has interest, I’ve been writing about (mostly obscure) pop songs from 1999 on my Substack.

Coming up Shola Ama’s flop, the Venn diagram between Kelly Llorenna and a kids TV show, one of the trance bangers posted above, and a few others that I’m just waiting for artist input on!

Diving Faeces

This completely forgotten remix which is nonetheless one of the warmest and loveliest dance records in existence

Yes albeit this summery slice of fun was released in the depths of February! I recall them performing it at 8:55 on Live & Kicking (or whatever time it started)

I have this on physical and it's the version of the video I posted. I literally had no idea there was a single mix released instead! Overseas, we only had the album version released.

I will absolutely second that the UK edits of both ATB songs are superior to the "main" European originals.

Particularly the X-Cabs "Don't Stop" which had a wonderful FRANTIC energy
