I was a bit apprehensive about seeing this because of the long runtime, and finding other space movies (Gravity, Interstellar, The Martian) to be fine at best. But I saw a lot of positive reactions so gave it a go and it's EASILY the most I've enjoyed a movie with a space setting.
I think 2026 has already found the best character of the year in Rocky. So adorable and provides a lot of humour and emotional pull. It didn't feel like it dragged as such, despite the length, but I was zoning out a couple of times during 'space action' scenes before it drew me back in as it got towards the end. Loved how deadpan Sandra Huller was, my favourite line was 'You have no immediate family. You don't even have a dog.' I was fully locked in whenever she was on screen, so I'm glad the Earth scenes were spread throughout.
(in a good way, I always note when you give something a high score)
About one third in I was starting to regret going to a fucking imax to watch a man interact with a rock but since I was forced to finish it I did end up somewhat enjoying it after all. Plus I love seeing men cry and Gosling did a splendid job of that.
