Prunella Scales DEAD

I thought this may be on the cards with Tim passing last year, before her.
I love Fawlty Towers probably my fave sitcom on par with Keeping Up Appearances,
 
Ach, that's a shame. Lasted longer than anyone expected mind you.
 
Unless she went flying out a window is the death of a 93 year old really that shocking?
 
I'm similarly tickled by psychic Halli predicting that the death of a 93 year old woman with dementia might be 'on the cards' :D

What I meant is that anyone with dementia even in their 90's can go on for quite some time, and it was more 'on the cards' given that her husband, soul mate, main carer passed away, I would think that may contribute to a time of passing
 
RIP. Sybil was such an iconic DRY FOIL to a comedic BUFFOON. she looked both 30 and 60. always loved her TOWERING BOUFFANT

I've seen the occasional tweet where Cleese seems SENSIBLE recently.

I can't be bothered exploring any further so I assume it's just a STOPPED CLOCK SITUATION

Oh, he is occasionally still right about stuff, it;s just that he slipped down the GeeBeebies rabbit hole and thinks "woke" is a thing. Strange given that it was his decision to remove certain bits from Fawlty Towers, including a use of the n-word by the Major, because he felt they'd dated beyond reasonable explanation.
 
They showed an episode of Fawlty Towers last night on BBC1 at 8pm in tribute. Poor ole Stacey Solomon got bumped off last minute for this and then a re-run of Garden Rescue. I have to say I do love Fawlty Towers but even last night I was thinking wow how outdated is this with the violence towards eachother. It was slapstick but still would not be on any kind of family sitcom today. I know this has been the case for many years with Fawlty Towers but it did dawn on me yesterday more than before!
 
Like all good sitcoms, Fawlty Towers is a window into another time, documenting both its character and its ridiculousness. The casual post-war xenophobia, the obsession with class system, the endurance of loveless marraiges because divorce wasn't "the done thing" and the overarching fear of what people might think of you are all superbly caught in the writing and the performance. The conflicts created by Harold Wilson's socially progressive Labour government (what a thought) are played out at length. Anything that is so carefully rooted in a societal era will date and, actually, that's fine.
 
Look, we're in a world where Jennifer Saunders believes she can't do AbFab anymore, and that's a lot more recent. Certainly some of the ACTUAL CHILD ABUSE hurled at Saffy wouldn't fly now.

My first thought.

Then I realised there was only 17 years between the start of Fawlty Towers and AbFab. And very nearly double that from the start of AbFab to now... :D
 
We watched a load ob fab the other night and it's still amazing, but then I suppose I'm not a Gen Z woke snowflake libtard etc etc. BRING BACK CHIMNEY SWEEPS

Oddly I just watched an old episode of The Good Life on BBC4 instead. It wasn’t one I remember seeing before and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Had dated very well.
 
That's the thing with Fawlty Towers- there are only 12 and I had exhausted them all years ago. Last nights was the one with the O'Reilly builders

That's a beauty. The best one is the one with Mrs Richards and Basil trying to bet on the horses on the fly.

It is slightly sobering at this age to realise the things you absolutely laughed out loud most at were when Patsy and Eddie were being foul to Saffy, though. Much less the slapstick "oh I'm so drunk" falling out of cars and more:

Saffy: (feeling her pregnancy bump) "Oh wow, it kicked"
Patsy: (leering over her) "I'm not surprised, I was tempted myself"

for me. Absolutely delicious.

Does that make me evil? Possibly.

That's a brilliant joke. It's unexpected but within character for the person making it while also having the obvious air that it's something that character wouldn't actually do. Again, the writing of AbFab captures some archetypes at a specific moment in time. These things have to make enough sense to stick, no matter how surreal the overall thrust (i.e. Father Ted has, at its core, a frustrated and ambitious man, banished due to financial improriety to the farthest corner his employer could manage).

And it's my biggest fault with so many tv shows- when people exaggerate the surreal archetype over the rest because they can run out of ideas. AbFab was guilty of it- by the end, Patsy was a dribbling mess, rather than the sharp, biting woman she was in early series.

They really overplayed the PATSY IS OLD AND HAS LOST HER MIND shtick. It could have been really good if they just alluded to it, as another element of her, rather than a whole personality.

Forgotten about by the movie.
 
Not coming for poor dead Prunella, but Cleese aside, the whole cast really maintained their fame for the rest of their lives, despite doing nothing close to Fawlty Towers for the following fifty years.

Oh yes, but it seemed like a decent plot device for a finale. Obviously not in that form and we may have lost Patsy realising she was played by a man, but still.

I can see why they chose that one, it’s a great Sybil ep.
