On a recent episode of Bandsplain, Sian Pattenden floated the theory that the song was about Justine Frischmann of Elastica. She said that she'd been in the group's orbit for several years and had never met the person Jarvis claimed the song was about and reckoned it was partly about Blur but mainly about Justine.

OT: For all that gets said about Justine, that first Elastica album is one of my all time favourite debuts, magpieing as it is.

The lead singer in Mattiel, Mattiel, reminds me of Justine. The influence is still alive

I'd love to be cool and say that my fave is 'A Little Soul' or 'Do You Remember the First Time?' or 'Like a Friend' or sth, but really, this is just too damn good. The amount of times I've gatecrashed respectable soirées and charmed gullible/horny members of the bourgeoisie into buying me a rum & coke, only to later terrify them by going on a classic spicey rant about how they will NEVER understand how it FEELS to live a life with no MEANING or CONTROL! Truly a song to live life by. 11/10.

If I was forced to choose one Pulp song, this wouldn't be it but that's partly because its embedded so hard into my brain, it might even have reached my DNA. Pulp have better, deeper, richer songs but Common People did exactly what it set out to do - it is an absolute triumph on every level the group intended.

Yeah its one I rarely play at home but after Glastonbury I was reminded just how anthemic it was

Controversial opinion I know, but I prefer their earlier songs like Babies, Razzmatazz, Lip Gloss and Do you remember the first time.

Razzmatazz was my first Pulp record. It was a 12" with a three-song suite on the b-side and it was all brilliant. It was fun to watch them get bigger and bigger and then just explode.
