Probably the same reason I hide my online status on Facebook, so I can pretend that I haven't seen something an annoying friend has posted.

My friend is lovely, just a bit too overenthusiastic about some things I find silly. If she saw I was online she'd be right on the livechat to me. So it's easier to hide my online status than hurt her feelings telling her that close-up photo's of dandelions and sparrows aren't really my bag.
In real life I listen to her stories about how hard it was to get that photo and I tell her stories about space, cars and other shite that she isn't interested in. That's what friendship is, choosing to keep your gob shut about insignificant annoyances to keep a friend and spare their feelings.
