My workplace has 2 mental health first aiders, both of whom have taken long periods of absence based on their mental health, and all they do now is send emails around telling people to go for walks and to try taking up arts and crafts. One has just organised a lunch hour to do embroidery together.

A friend of mine is currently overworked and extremely stressed because she’s not getting any support, with urgent work being piled on her constantly and no one ever picks up anything when she’s on leave. The person who should be supporting her IS the mental health first aider.

That they announce Taylor Swift's new album as a BBC News headline on TV — fine if you're a fan, but why's it there as a major news story?
Even I would find it awkward if one of the 'Enya has come out of her castle to release a new album' becomes one of the headlines. 😅
 
Also people significantly leaning back on a flight (economy class) and not moving forward when the person behind asks (especially when food comes around). 🫥
I didn’t experience that myself this time, but was so annoyed when some girl in front of my sister was this way, apparently watching the news on the flight screen, but was just on her phone watching something else, lounging as if it's her own place. :rolleyes:

These are very specific to you rather than Mental Health First Aiders in general. I have had the help of a MFHA last year which was very beneficial, and I have now been trained up as a MFHA. Sometimes a lived experience is very beneficial as it’s much more relatable than someone who has never had any issues.

Yes, probably. Can only go from our own experiences, and with me being public sector it is insane what people get away with that they wouldn’t anywhere else.

Not doing well in your role? Making lots of mistakes and getting appropriately managed with re-training and getting your work checked before your horrendous outgoing correspondence sees the light of day? How convenient that just before the performance reviews are due, you get a mental health check and up to 6 months off on full pay!

This is very specific to my department and it’s not uncommon at all.

How most mental health specialists basically do the role for money/recognition is true. They give the most generic advice, even to people who have filled in those questionnaires, specified what their issues are/it's quite obvious, then (maybe this is just my case because I haven't really connected with them) completely cutting you off after a few months, saying 'check out talk therapy' without resolving anything. 🙃

We do have a proper Occupational Health department and they are actually useful. Have a work friend who is on sabbatical right now (but probably not coming back), and he genuinely has been through the most awful stuff that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but he says the actual trained in house professionals have been wonderful.

That's good to know he felt supported by them. 😌 I suppose the thing is when it gets very serious/life-threatening then the right people are more likely to be there, but a lot of that has to be documented in a comprehensive way (and in the workplace, there probably is a lot more documentation than just vague notes from the GP and the next people they refer to).

It wasn't too bad today on the TV, more talk about Zelenskyy and Keir Starmer haha, but seeing a whole party they have in Liverpool for the A-Level students is a bit strange.
That's hopefully the last year I get any exposure to A-Level people :D my youngest sister got her results today, mostly happy with them. 😊

Them going on about 'wow, so many got As/the top grades' or 'boys got better than girls this year' is what I don't like about it.

I think both have a point - I'm a MHFA instructor and work in the public sector and find that many MHFAiders have their own MH challenges because to volunteer for such a role, you need to be a naturally empathetic type, and it gets people down after a while without adequate supervision and support. It's true that it is impossible to sack someone who can't do their job though, and this has an impact on wider teams. I don't think that's the fault of MHFAiders and similar pastoral teams though, it's the fault of organisational structures and line managers. But even they reach out to me saying they feel powerless and don't have the language, or worry about even asking colleagues reporting to them about their mental health, for fear of getting it wrong.

If anything is to blame it's the litigious society and prevailing stigma.

There’s a lot of stuff in here which I’d say is more along the lines of annoying, frustrating, boils your piss rather than ‘hate’. I reserve that for the REALLY bad stuff. And Ed Sheeran.

We're doing a pub lunch on Christmas Day this year and have had it booked in for a couple of weeks already :redface:

I think as far back as May, my partner's mum had been asking if bookings will be open.
 
September? That’s late! Back when I actually worked in an office pre-pandemic you’d be lucky to get any availability on the popular dates (ie the last few Fridays in December before Christmas) if you hadn’t booked by MAY!
 
Back in the days when I used to be sociable and organise it, I'm fairly sure I had it sorted by now if you want a decent date.

Leave it a couple of weeks and you'll be looking at midweek in the first week of December already in anywhere half decent.
