Weirdly not mentioned by the main press at all though (not that weird as Farage and his ilk get away with this shit all the time)
 


A) This is low, even for Reform.
B) I haven't seen a bigger backlash to rightwing bullshit on X for a LONG time. I think this one will blow up on them more than that dogdy £5m donation.

He seems to have found his niche with an angry and noisy minority, but keeping that niche on side ostracises the middle ground who might have considered voting Reform until he says the quiet bits out loud. To stay relevant, he actually has to put most people off.
 
God forbid actually doing his job would keep him relevant.

 
It's all in plain site - he literally is telling these people that want to vote for him that he will do nothing for them and just indulge in culture wars in order to try and distract attention from the no useful economic policies. So if they vote for him, then meh. The counter to that though is to get the vote out on the centre left - not sit on their arses or get sniffy about the bits they don't like - actually accept that by not voiting they are risking fucking things even worse and take the responsibility to actually fucking vote - and I'm looking at you Zack Polanski casually not fucking voting at the locals.
 
They're coming up with terrible shit here in Essex. The national anthem after council meetings, removing LQBTQ book stands from libraries, banning mixed sex school toilets + pornographic books from school libraries and scrapping net zero policies.

Kill it with fire.

I do believe a very large portion of Reform voters are locked in now, MAGA style. I’m not sure what it will take to rewire their brains, but it’s not anything I’ve seen so far.
 
A large proportion of them will be locked in, but 1. there are still a huge number of undecided voters, 2. their polling numbers have plateaued and even sunk a bit over the last year or so (this isn't to say that it'll definitely stay the case over the next few years - just that it hasn't been an insurmountable rise), and 3. their numbers are still not quite enough that in their position, I'd be confident it'll definitely be enough to win - not least because oppositions that make it into government in the UK usually only manage it by attempting some degree of reassurance, and they just keep doubling down on the kind of stuff that puts off a lot of the normal majority in this country.

(That said, we're locked in a bit of an alien vs predator dynamic at the minute where the government and varying opposition parties seem to be doing the best they can to make themselves unappealing as the obvious receptacle to be the 'stop Reform' vote, which isn't all that reassuring either.)

I would hope his obvious dog-whistles would be enough to put off Reform voters concerned about racism, but I wonder to what extent people tempted by Reform would consider accusations of a two-tier justice system or a statement that white lives matter as racist. I think he has chosen his words carefully even as he lurches to meet the extreme right.
 
Unfortunately America has shown us that white ignorance doesn't usually allow for nuanced thoughts like "maybe there's something larger at work here". The "I'm not racist, but" crowd is way, way bigger than the democrats anticipated and I do fear that we are far more similar than I once thought. This populist movement has successfully nailed the one-policy narrative in ways I never thought possible - British people actively ignoring the overwhelming, easy-to-find evidence that Nigel Farage is happy to sacrifice the NHS for power, he's corrupt as fuck, there's a knowledge and experience vaccuum among its brand new army of councillors and many of them are first class bigots. ALL of this and yet, it is still being completely drowned out by immigration, and fingers in the ears for absolutely everything else that might inconveniently distract from that. It's just fucking WILD.

There was a segment on a British town where 60% of inhabitants voted for Brexit on the french 8 o’clock news yesterday, they interviewed a woman who hated Europe so much she only stocked British flowers in her flowershop. She said Brexit had been a failure because it hadn’t been implemented properly, needless to say she was voting Reform because “they were the only ones to finally get it right”. They showed all the foreign shops closed down ( polish butchers etc) and those still living there were too scared too talk. It was deeply disturbing to watch tbh, and hard to believe just how many people simply don’t like foreigners in England. They, not the Conservative Government of the last 15 years, are responsible for unemployment, social inequality, loss of quality of life, spending power etc. Make it make sense.

I wouldn't even give successive governments that much credit. Try blood sucking corporations and billionaires.
 
I went to Artschool in London in the 90s, the fee was 300£, there was a brilliant mixture of people from all social backgrounds, London was incredible- it really felt like being in the center of the universe. It changed my life and I’ve always been incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be able to go and study abroad… and for years I went back to teach on the course. It’s so incredibly sad to see what’s happened in the last 10 years. I don’t recognize London anymore, it feels like a completely different place.

What in particular did you not recognise?
 
Yeah, what’s different about London? I’ve lived and worked here my whole life. If anything, it’s more diverse in the social structure of people than it ever was.
 
I imagine a lot would depend on where in London you are/were, wouldn't it? It's so vast, it's difficult to generalise. I'm fairly sure most statistics would indicate overall London is as, or more diverse than ever (albeit Brexit will have changed the nature of the diversity), but central London has become less diverse due to affordability, and ethnic diversity has moved outwards.

Certainly I've got a few friends who did the squatting thing in Central London (the two I'm thinking of squatted in King's Cross and Angel) who drone on about it NOT BEING THE SAME ANY MORE, but then I don't know how much of that is due to them now being in their 50s with different perspectives than they had in their early twenties.
