Relisten #4: Light Years & Fever (TONIGHT 7.30pm)

I have come full circle on Love At First Sight. It really is fulfilling and tremendous.

One of the reasons I'm enjoying this double-relisten so much is that I know both of these albums so well, have used and abused them solidly for two decades... they are truly adored, a part of my musical education and a piece of my heart. Listening through them in full feels like COMING HOME.

Light Years in particular felt like Kylie coming home when it was released

YES I ABSOLUTELY CRIED

Love At First Sight is phenomenal pop song. I don't give a flying fuck that it's overplayed. It's fucking sensational!

The French nu-disco influence on the production (it sounds so FULL and LAYERED), her HEAVENLY VOCALS, the sheer ROMANCE of it all! THAT was a CLASSIC.

I absolutely adored Can't Get You Out Of My Head when it was first released, but I never listen to it now. I hate it in her shows too. I recognise its genius, but it's just a bit *too* simple and repetitive for me.

I've only briefly lost my love for the La La song. She just doesn't do it it live justice.

That said it's a hypnotic moment of incredible power pop and a genuine slice of pop history.

Fever never did much for me and still doesn't really. I find it really irritating.

I genuinely think the Fever tour was my favourite performance of Head. Just her. No dancers.

I think it's quite hard to find anything particularly interesting to say about Head. What can you say that hasn't been said already? How do you dissect genius?

The seductive MYSTERY of those elongated verse lines ("won't you staaaaaaaaay?", set me freeeeeee...") has never once failed to thrill me. There is such a timeless brilliance to this track - for me the feeling it evokes is utterly tied into the visual of the video, that idea of driving a retro sports car through an abandoned future metropolis where there is nothing other than the music, repetitive beats going on and on and on with no end in sight...

It's one of the greatest songs of all time.
