What do we think of this almost 20 years on? Obviously it relies heavily on the Soft Cell sample but still one of my faves from her early years

Obviously she evolved from this kinda pop fluff but it's still fun! What do you think?!

I know Umbrella was the big one for her but I also think this made people notice her

I like it, definitely a better lead than Pon De Replay. But somewhat basic and reliant on the sample. Rihanna didn’t really flourish till the next album and then especially thereafter. Pop music was still pretty grim in 2006 but this was a step in the right direction.

The follow up singles Unfaithful and We Ride were awful so this was the obvious hit. I like the album track Kisses Don’t Lie.

Oh I like We Ride.

Unfaithful was and still is complete piss. Her vocals are so nauseating on that song. Imagine watching that video of her performing Hero and still thinking it's ok to have her sing a ballad.

Rihanna is best for me when a song's main selling point is attitude, not musical talent.
