Rolling Stone have updated their infamous Top 500 albums list (last updated in 2003) and as you’d expect they’ve done an Oscars and overhauled their voting academy to be less like an old sausage fest. The results are stark and it’s getting a fair bit of press:
2020:
01. Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On

03. Joni Mitchell – Blue
04. Stevie Wonder – Songs in the Key of Life
05. The Beatles – Abbey Road
06. Nirvana – Nevermind
07. Fleetwood Mac – Rumours
08. Prince and the Revolution – Purple Rain
09. Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks
10. Lauryn Hill – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
2003:
01. The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
02. The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
03. The Beatles – Revolver
04. Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited
05. The Beatles – Rubber Soul

it’s all very subjective but media are saying it sets a precedent for other outlets to catch up. Looking at you, Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame...

- The Beatles are NOT number one for the first time - that’s now Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”
- Whereas black music was largely minor and focused on classic soul, classic hip-hop and a bit of Prince, Hendrix and MJ thrown in, now it’s much, much more diverse. Prince, Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder enter the top 10, modern soul gets a look in for the first time and is quite dominant (Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Alicia Keys and Mary J Blige among others feature prominently)
- Women are much more prominently featured. Joni Mitchell at #3, Fleetwood Mac at #7, Lauryn at #10, Aretha #13. Top 50 still very male dominated but further down is much more of a mix.
- Hip-Hop is much more dominant now. Familiar names like Public Enemy and Outkast climb up and are joined by Wu Tang Clan, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Notorious BIG, Dr Dre and Nas in the Top 50
- Pop icons that are normally ignored in these sorts of classic music lists feature for the first time. Beyonce, Whitney, Mariah and Lady Gaga join Madonna and Michael Jackson for the first time. “Lemonade” is actually one of the highest new entries at #32
- Any Winehouse and Adele both debut
- Very recent acts such as Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey even get a look in
- It largely changes the long held industry narrative that the best albums ever made were mostly made pre-1980. This list totally rejects that concept.
