RPDR CAN S01E06: Star Sixty-Nine

Another good episode. It's been really similar to the UK show in that the very beginning wasn't great but there's been a massive upward trend since episode three.

I'm sad to see BOA leave, and overall I preferred her to Ilona, but Ilona has really proven herself in the lipsyncs.

I love Rita and think she might be my favourite, but the runway was just OK for me. Jimbo's was impeccable, as was Scarlet's.

I get where they're coming from with Lemon, in that she is very confident and dominant and quite annoying, but I do wonder if she'd annoy people as much if she had the exact same personality but was 15 years older.

JBC continues to be a bit irritating. I feel like he's constantly acting, and obviously that's part of the role, but with Brooke Lynn and Stacey and even the US judges it feels like they can drop the sctick when they need to and come off as human when necessary. Whereas he's doing his best mean gay impression even though he comes off as lovely off the show.

I thought this was the best episode so far. Glad to see Baga doing well, she’s my favourite, but I wasn’t expecting her to win this challenge.

Kelly actually slayed the lip sync, it was a song made for her, and her runway face was giving me a bit more 80’s Madonna than Kelly Osbourne.

Lemon is growing on me, whereas Bobo I’m quite done with.

I really like Rita Baga, especially her striking face and constant glare, but her win I did not see coming. Oh at all.

I didn't think Lemon's runway deserved the unrelenting criticism it got. You could see she was attaching the denim cliches and trying to make it an all in 1 of a different kind. It just didn't work and concentrating more on her silhouette would be a really simple way to improve a lot.

Perhaps it's time to have winners for runways and main challenges separate as Jimbo was way above everyone else by a mile, and should have won anyway as his lapse into week 1's mania was just so good. I'm also enjoying singing an adapted Kylie's Limbo whenever he appears (in my head obviously).

Stacie's hair looked amazing. She looked like a Street Fighter character.

Oh and is "Tom Green" Angus Deaton's drag name? Uncanny. I know it's childish and about 2 decades late to make such rubbish jokes, but he was walking out like he'd just had that high profile testicle operation (unless that was one of Drew Barrymore's many other famous partners).

I thought his comment towards Ilona about her ass was not on. There’s a difference between saying something constructive or even something slightly shady and just being mean.

Agreed, Jeffrey's craic is the worst.

Even if he'd said it was a nice bottom and then said more powder, how can anyone talk about someone else's body with that kind of a tone and think they're just doing their job. We're not talking being fed lines to say here now.

And yes, if he were a top (highly doubt it), I'd throw Iona and her corn beef tush in front of a bus to do so.

Brooke Lynn also mentioned it during the deliberation, but that didn't bother me as much in Ilona's absence. Them choosing to edit in another shot of her ass to underline the point did feel off, though.

If Jeffrey is as lovely off the show as many are saying, and this sprint in the direction of mean gay is just a misjudged move for the show, then I do feel sorry for him. It's backfired on him so badly that he may not get a second season as a judge now.

The judging was bizarre this week. I actually thought Rita was going to be bottom two with Boa, while watching the playbacks. And if Jimbo's performance in the challenge wasn't enough to convince judges to give her the win (which it should have been), then the runway should certainly have pushed things in his favour.

To be honest, I loved it as he was basically parodying straight man stag do drag, which is the only drag I'll concede is truly misogynistic. Plus his tone darling, it was something worthy of discussion on The Actor's Studio, etc.

IT'S MY SPECIAL DAY may not be comic genius, but it was the only thing that actually raised a laugh for me this challenge. It was all in the delivery.

As for Jeffrey, I very much doubt they'll fire him. It'll be interesting to see if he attempts to course-correct in S2 though. He can't be unaware of how poorly he's coming across.

Does anyone know how many episodes are left? Just wondering if we're heading for a final three or four.

Beginning to worry slightly for Scarlett BoBo. Surely she'll get the 'you haven't had a win yet' edit soon of someone who has been consistently high or safe. Which presumably means she'll either win next week or be bottom two.

I think Ilona will have to be amazing next week to avoid the chop, though.

If it's a final three, surely it has to be Rita and Jimbo plus one other. Just not sure who the other one will be.

Jimbo and Rita are so far ahead of the others, I am so sad only one of them can win. Jimbo’s acting performances are always so layered and combined with the high fashion runways he should have it in the bag, but I suppose they have to create the illusion of competition.

I didn't get the Rita win at all- I thought it was Scarlet's to be honest. Anyway, not too worried as overall Rita is the best, so it's all good.

The right person went home- Boa has been coasting and never quite hitting the spot she promised and Ilona definitely won the (BORING) lip sync.

It really feels like the show is setting things up for a Rita win, which I'm fine with as she's fabulous, but this week's win was definitely a head-scratcher.

I found a lot of the judging strange though. The SISSY sketch was unwatchably bad, and I didn't find that Scarlet elevated it any more than Ilona did.

Jimbo, Rita and BOA's sketch was a bit of a mess, but it was in another league, even if BOA was a slight weak link.

I thought the Jimbo comments were really bizarre. It was almost like they were reluctantly giving praise and seemed to focus on how she'd taken their feedback onboard (as if she NEEDED any in relation to the others!) rather than the fact her outfit knocked everyone else out of the park and yet again was one of the strongest overall. I don't know, there was just something off about it and even before Rita bagged her third win, it convinced me they have no intention of a Jimbo victory. That was absolutely Jimbo's to lose. It reminded me of Jujubee's recent run - in reality she should have finished the season on about 3 wins.

Obviously this may change and I hope Jimbo gets another win. Rita is amazing too so I'm fine with that but so far it feels a little preordained especially when she, surely, didn't really "win" that challenge, much as her performance was great.

Also ASTOUNDED Lemon won that mini challenge - how is that even possible? It was actually a really funny one, with almost everyone delivering, and Lemon's was entirely nothingy in comparison. Are we missing cut footage here? It was totally random otherwise...

Poor Boa though I think she's a classic example of her drag not necessarily suiting the Drag Race format, at least across an entire season. She was one of the funniest most of the time, but clearly not a script following girl and some ropey outfits meant an early-ish exit. Yet I have no doubt she'd be one of the best to go and see live where she doesn't have to keep up with the formula and range expected of them. A classic Allstars candidate if she ever gets the chance.

This series is so refreshing for some reason, I've only just caught up pretty much not realizing it was on Iplayer, but it feels so strong and NEW in a way. Quite happy for Scarlet to leave next, but everyone left has merit.

The judging and set-up is kind of awkward though (and at the same time equally charming for being so rough around the edges). Jeffrey seems to be getting flack, and fair enough, but they've ALL been a little blunt and mean-spirited in their comments, Brooklyn and Stacey just as much in some ways. It makes you appreciate Ru/Michelle/Ross etc for carefully not crossing that line somehow. Not that I think it's THAT bad, but if there's any course-correcting going on it should be on a team level clearly rather than just Jeffrey himself.

Also - the Jimbo back and forth side-eyes in his denim get up was everything in this episode I can't find it, thought it would've been captured by now.

As long as we have a Jimbo/Rita top 2 I'm fine but I'm scared for poor Jimbo now
