S12 E09: Choices 2020

What does that even mean? Their religion is different/exotic as long as they’re in minority. That happens everywhere, some of us have experienced it the other way round.

And some of us have experienced it enough ways to know that just because America doesn't hang queer people homonationalism is still BULLSHIT.

Um... well I really liked that episode as a fan of surreal humour :D

The cat litter mini challenge was an unaware parody of clunky brand-sponsored mini challenges, with lunatic cat impressions. Jaida's CAT SLUT was my favourite, scratching pole dancer :D

The Werkroom was good value too, because Raven was amazing, two real LOL lines

I enjoyed the main challenge, total chaos. Again Jaida did the right thing - I guess she didn't really have the material, but she made it work somehow. Jackie is going the scripted-to-destruction Cracker route, but bottom 2 was very 'arsh. Still loving Crystal.

TBH Jaida winning wasn't a hard pick, but the bottom 2 was a question. Widow flatlined (but I enjoyed the straighfaced Hokey Kokey line), Sherry wasn't really very good, and Gigi was trying to coast with what worked before. I was REALLY hoping there would be a robot wig reveal near the end, which would've helped.

Runways were all pretty decent, I really liked Widow's idea, even if the execution was a little basic. Gigi just had another costume (very similar to her entrance look, right?)

As for "the question", I did oop, but I didn't feel like it was mean-spirited either, and Jackie got to say her piece which is the most important point.
I was so sad that she was against Widow, because I thought Widow would dance her off the floor, but Jackie really knew how she was going to sell it.

OK my Ru-nk:

1)Crystal - Really coming into her own now, I liked her runway and her main challenge. I really hope she gets a win soon.

2)Jackie - Again, love her smarts, even though it's looking anything but effortless. Which is interesting, because I haven't really heard her bitching about how hard everything is. Very happy to see her lip syncing skills were up to snuff.

3)Jaida - I'm really in love with her. Sickening looks, a good eye for humour, what more do I need?

4)Gigi - Going off the boil, but I still have confidence she'll be the winner in the end. I thought her doing badly a few times would make her successes feel less calculated, but somehow it's not really. I hope she gets a bit of humility, and soon.

5)Heidi - Also on the downturn for me. Great last week, and still gives good talking-head, but she's Moniquing for me. She's resting on things that got laughs before. The tooth whistle thing isn't really giving me the Ooh Ahh Sensation anymore.

6)Widow - I liked her a lot more in this episode than last week, and her runway was a good idea. I think this series really got to her though, and it was sad to see her just imploding over the last few episodes. Her parting words were good though

7)Sherry - Yeah when is she going out? I saw a bit more of her this week, and of course it's impossible to be impartial now, but I didn't like it. In fairness, she only did the Katherine Hepburn thing again when prompted, but it didn't make sense in the challenge. I hope her pancake makeup and black little eyes will sashay away soon, the judges were sounding a bit tired of her.

HIYA

So Imma going to comment on the LEWKS and nothing else. But I really loved Jackie's look, and thought she aced the lip sync. I don't think she should have been bottom 2 though.

I thought everyone was a bit shoddy in the challenge, and if Jaida had pulled that 'confusing' schtick in say a snatch game she'd have been read rotten for it. That said, it was her or Heidi who were the most memorable.

I think this chat has veered way to off topic from the show itself. Can we please keep on topic?

I've moved all the chat about homosexuality and religion into a separate thread as the conversation was veering away from the show itself.

Well The Guardian thought it was one of the best episodes EVER! Did the writer not see REVENGE OF THE QUEENS! -

"This was, truly, one of the best ever episodes of Drag Race. It had it all. Laughs, cries, Jeff Goldblum, political intrigue, touching moments and some of the amateurish absurdity that made us fall in love with Drag Race way back in season 1. 10/10. Well done everyone!"

So this is going to go down as a real stand out episode.

Ru-watching and up to the runways. The main challenge was actually very good indeed. Gigi was the worst, but still hardly a car crash.

Gigi should have been in the bottom as even her runway was a repetition (and could barely be called drag). I hope she has a bolt of lightning left to strike with. Widow sulking at RuPaul's can I get an amen really did make me enjoy her getting the 9 inch (boot "lol").

Just got to Jackie's emotional yet composed answer. Her Muslim Geri outfit was a little boring, let's just unwrap that one (although I loved her flapping it about near the end of Firework - it was divine), but the statement was beautiful and so is she. The key thing about Jeff's question is that he wanted to listen to the answer, which some people aren't very good at

Michelle being cut off to be Ru's new rucurring go-to please.

All in all, the winner of this week's challenge was:

RAVEN :disco:

Oh fuck, I wanted to say something about Sherry. Basically I'm not here for the public stoning. I don't know the ins, outs and injections of it all, but someone doing drag having gender identity issues can hardly be uncommon and for somehing that is probably being suppressed, finding a really extreme and secretive way of expressing that just makes me feel really sorry for all parties concerned in a rotten situation. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if Sherry Sues the show - they're not showing the responsibility for the situation like their disclaimer thinks they are. She is performing at a decent level, but we're not getting to make our mind up and this audience condescension is going to form an opinion regardless and for me that one is sympathetic to their Rosemary West of drag figure they're creating.

Edit: having finally heard more of the details via the Alexis Trinnity podcast I'm not sure I still feel this way, but I'll keep it rather than delete :D

Is Sherry claiming the reason that she acted the way she did is because she is trans? Because honestly FUCK OFF. :manson:

I think they've handled the Sherry thing as well as could be expected. What the hell can she sue them for? They're showing all of her challenges and runways - despite the lack of talking heads and workroom footage, we all know exactly what she's about and what her shtick is. They haven't cut her out entirely and they've kept everything that matters from a competitive perspective.

You could argue this should have been kept private and the season shown as normal, but then they still would have had to explain her absence in the final which of course realistically she had to be disqualified from, and she publicly admitted it all anyway.

I'm not here for mass lynching and cancel culture at all but bitch is lucky she's still featuring and shown to be, on balance, one of the stronger queens.

Well precisely and I'm sure she does have issues and needs help BUT how does that equate to what she did in any way, or at least justify it? She's been caught out on something gross and morally indecent and that's it.

Which reminds me, I won't need to put in those new marigolds and petunias this year. When the police turn up and see my mum's bony arm sticking out of the soil, they'll understand when I tell them about my depression, especially in lockdown. Hopefully they'll take her rotting carcass away for free and I can be left to live out my BEST BITS without her clogging up the garden.

After watching Fashion Photo Ruview, I finally realised that Crystal and Gigi didn’t have any stars or stripes :D

Am I just being unimaginative about the theme? I thought they meant actual Stars and Stripes, not just Red, White and Blue / something America

That was a terrible main challenge by any standards surely? I can't remember the last time they did this but I remember the Season 4 one, a season with much stronger queens, falling flat because everyone turned up minus any decent jokes or characters or spark and Sharon Needles winning the challenge by default in one of her weakest episodes. I think. Watching again I'd probably think it was amazing compared to this.

I don't understand because it's such an obvious one to go over the top in and be ridiculous rather than stand there and be boring as fuck. Maybe the fact they have to think on their feet throws everyone off kilter.

If you combine the challenge and runways, Jackie was top 2 with Jaida, who was at least sparky and in the room, and I just don't understand anything about how she was put in the bottom 2?! Her jokes weren't terrible, a couple were actually funny and that's when almost everyone else turned up without a single gag, character or presence between them! Was it to deliberately engineer that moment and for her to lip sync in that outfit? I actually think it's more likely that, knowing how good Widow was at lip syncing previously, they saw Jackie as the next one to go and didn't want to risk losing Gigi, who was dire. Luckily Jackie killed it.

Gigi probably still the favourite at this point, I didn't think her advert last week was bad, but this has shaken things now and Sherry has also gone off the boil. If Gigi doesn't ramp it up to 10 immediately then Jaida deserves the win.

Even though it was different to the others I thought Widow's outfit was awful - it just looked like a basic dress with a couple of cardboard, foil covered stars glued on!

I’ve done a bit of a 180 on Widow’s (again), I guess that’s what it WAS, but the concept was solid and interesting. Whereas Gigi’s (mum’s) was technically very good and couture (read: she’s skinny) but it didn’t fit the brief and it was a bit Gigi by numbers.

I do wonder if the name of the runway was changed after the queens knew about it (something more America-centric rather than stars & stripes specific)

I don’t know why I enjoyed the challenge so much, I mean it’s horses for courses but I came out thinking that was one of the better episodes of the season, and everyone else saying it was one of the worse episodes of television of any show ever :D

It definitely wasn't a bad episode because of everything else that went on around the mini and maxi challenges.

But those two challenges were some of the worst in Drag Race history. The mini for the very idea of it, and the maxi for the execution of it.

I didn't say that at all.

She can't say anything that would "justify" it and that was not my point. I'm not interested in either scenario where someone likely miserable and most certainly rotten has a comeback or the person is constantly condemned without any attempt to understand what got them to that place. It's really not a huge leap to suppose that someone assuming a drastically different identity on the internet was enacting a side of themselves they otherwise kept secret, and my point was that this may have been why it became so extreme.

But I also said this before properly engaging with what she had done - the Alexis interview was enough to highlight this for me.

I think saying Gigi 'not fitting the brief' is taking it the brief very literally. Or at least you COULD say that, but also that she was 'thinking outside of the box' if you wanted to justify praising it. If you think about what the Stars and Stripes represent (rather than just an outfit with some stars and stripes on it), then I think her outfit was a masterstroke - basing an outfit on the American Revolution.

However, the fact that it was both very costumey and similar to previous looks was a problem.

Also that it was based on the uniform of the other side in that war :basil:

Yes, i did think that. She obviously thought she'd look better in a redcoat. But either way her defeat (so quite fitting) effectively created what became the stars and stripes.

that’s the question I had, what did “Stars and stripes forever” mean? I mean they’ve had plenty of runways based on a specific visual thing, like flowers, bows, glitter etc. So I wondered if it was supposed to be like that.

but I can’t imagine how Gigi and Crystal ended up like that if it was.

but also I can’t imagine how Widow and Jackie could put a twist on the visual motif if it wasn’t a motif challenge.

And none of the judges said anything about any of them, it was just an unusually broad brief for Drag race, thats what surprised me

yes I didn’t know enough about American history to really challenge it but I thought so :D an odd choice! She must have really wanted to wear that.

oooh Theory: do you think Gigi wanted to wear it for the Red White and Blue promo look and had to switch it out? The Evil Kneivel promo look would’ve been much better for this week

This is a very important point I think.

"X asked whether there was something in gay culture that made it oversexed and perverse, but that's okay because he was really interested in the answer.' :):)

FYI, I don't doubt that Goldblum asked the question not as a provocation but as an opportunity to learn, but that doesn't matter. Just because his intentions were genuine doesn't mean that the way he asked the question wasn't shit. Honestly, what frustrates me about this forum sometimes is that the conversations about racism are as basic, blinkered and as brittle as they are out there in the real world. This obsession with absolving people who don't have 'bad' intentions is really exhausting; we need to move beyond that to understand racism in terms of its implication or EFFECT rather than what is intended. Intentions mean fuck all. You can be a well intended racist. To replicate well-worn stereotypes in a question would be problematic with ANY other community, but when it comes to Islam, it's suddenly a valid talking point. That is precisely the problem.

(I'm coming to your other points, don't FRET, but after that, don't expect any responses from me, THANKS)
