Woke up feeling perky this morning. Went for a dry pub lunch and then pissed my gift vouchers away in the H&M sale.
 
Had to pop to the corner shop for some fags. Asked for Twenny Bennies and assistant looks round to make sure nobody else was in earshot and whispered "do you want some duty frees for £12 each?" and winked. Daft question! Then we reminisced about going in for secret flour and bogroles during Covid.
 
If duty frees are £12, how much are B&H usually?
 
Just been out to get wine, its proper cold out.
 
I saw last night at the casino cigs are $18 a pack. When I quit I was having a fit over paying $4 a pack.
 
I haven’t smoked at all now for a few years, but it was £15ish when I stopped. It’s insane. I remember buying B&H for £1.99 for 20.

I had a three course lunch in a lovely brasserie for £22. Struggling to get my head around a packet of 20 being practically the same price.

And look at a lot of the chains (although this wasn't) - many have cheap deals in January, presumably as few people eat out then.

It’s actual insanity to me that some people will pay £140 a week to smoke. I was always a social smoker so I get that I don’t understand the addiction, but fuck me…
 
I stopped nearly three years ago but I only ever used to pay about £11 for 20 B&H.
 
As a child my mother would send me to get cigarettes for her (!) from a machine in the street (!!) without any need for ID (!!!). They were 5 Deutsche Mark (around 2.50 Euro) for 20 back then.
 
I distinctly remember as a child when they approached £1 for the first time, and they started reducing the number in a packet, rather than increasing the cost, presumably because they thought people would stop smoking rather than cross that psychological hurdle.
 
The cheapest I can remember them is 75 cents for a 20 pack. My grandma would sent me to the corner store for a pack of Benson & Hedges Menthol Ultra Light 100s and let me keep the quarter to buy a pack of Garbage Pail Kids.
 
When I started smoking (43 years ago) it was 10p for a fag and a match from the corner shop. I think it was about £1.20 for a twenty packet but I was fourteen and never had £1.20 in one go.
 
I remember as a child one of our chores was to empty the ashtrays and wash them out. Both my parents smoked (and my Dad very heavily, at least back in the 70s and 80s) and I remember i used to gag washing the ashtrays.

And the house always STANK
 
Yeah I seem to remember it being 99p for 10 Lambert, why I have that knowledge is a mystery.

I think one of the reasons I never took it up was that my Nana chainsmoked in the house, and I stayed there a lot. It stank. But she did get me some walky talkies with her EMBASSY points one christmas because I was clearly her favourite.
 
I used to be the only person aged 13 who could get served out of my mates so I would charge an extra 10p per 10 and go with loads of change every night to the local corner shop and say “ten packets of ten benson and hedges, please” and throw about ten pounds in change at the poor shop assistant.

Always used to pay for my cigs and the packet of pickled onion Space Raiders you needed to disguise your breath so your parents apparently wouldn’t notice :D
 
When spawn was fourteen or fifteen she used to buy a packet of Lambert & Butler with her dinner money on the way to school then sell them off singly to her classmates to make a profit. I was horrified but a teeny bit proud when I discovered that.
 
L&B were always fucking horrible. Felt like smoking the shavings off the floor.
 
I’m a Marlboro Gold girl and they are hitting 18 quid a packet. I smoke about 10 a day.

Our old 5p pieces used to get accepted as 1DM in those street machines. Happy days on the school exchange to Kelsterbach
