Saint Etienne: International (and new single: Glad)

My big worry is the use of things like "fun in the next year or so", which seems to contradict "we're not splitting up" to me. I hope they continue as a live act at least.

And I still think they'll purloin the vaults for fan club releases at some point- there's still some stuff not available on vinyl as it is, so hopefully they keep that up.
 
Oh yes even if they are inactive I expect back catalogue/vault releases are still likely.

I bought the lot. Although I’ve been thinking of ending my Saint Etienne collecting, I guess one final hurrah won’t hurt. The sense of finality does make me wonder about carrying on. I can actually think about completing it now ( mean, virtually impossible, but still!)
 
Preordered. I restricted myself to one, no burnt fingers here. If there’s a farewell tour next year we should pick a gig for an ageing Moopygay meet.

Apparently the two bonus CDs ARE different! SURPRISINGLY!
 
Why does it feel EVERYONE supposedly turned down Believe at some point? :D
 
I’ve been playing Words and Music a lot since the announcement. It feels the album that fits the the theme of the end the best. It’s all incredibly nostalgic for me too. Absolute peak of my stalking era, young(er/ish) and with zero cares in the world it felt like at the time. Or as they said:

No responsibility
Endless possibility
What could possibly hurt me?
 
When I read that it was over, I was a complete cliche and went straight for Hobart Paving. The argument for Bob Stanley as a truly great lyricist would surely centre around that song. I have no real idea what's meant by "and like a harpsichordist she moved" but I know that the shiver that goes through me when Cracknell sings it is very real.
 
I've just popped on I've Been Trying To Tell You. Really just the ticket on a lovely day like today.

Don’t. It upsets me more than you know that I’m not.

I even thought about it this week and it made me sad. I submitted a Grace Jones but didn’t get in. I was entirely gutted.
 
And Hobart Paving is achingly lovely. Not my favourite lyrically by a long chalk, but, yes, there’s some absolute melancholic splendour there.
 
I'll never not appreciate just how luxurious it was getting to hear most of Too Young To Die for the first time. I don't even know what songs were my stepping stones to buying it, but any pop fan is finding a new soundtrack for life with that compilation surely. When greatest hits functioned with purpose, it was a proud autograph and showcase for their flair and even their own excitement for pop music itself. And that it ended on the absolutely dizzying He's On The Phone. And reading Julie Burchill's blurb on the back almost bringing their music to life in a way I don't think many reviews ever have for me.
 
My album entry point was ‘Tiger Bay’ as the singles were stellar from that but of course picked up the previous (excellent two) down the line.
 
Yes I came in at Tiger Bay, having only seen their Christmas song on TOTP before. Too Young To Die really was my St Et revelation.
 
I think it might actually have been Tell Me Why with Paul Van Dyk, randomly. Possibly I was aware of He’s On The Phone, but it’s tough to parse what I remember from the time from what I later picked up from Dotmusic/Moopy.

Probably more than anyone else beyond the Swedish-language artists I love, they’re a band I primarily discovered through their most vocal fans here like @Sheena, much to his chagrin at the time :D

In terms of first purchase it must have been one of the compilations. I think I checked out Sound of Water but beyond the singles it was a bit too ambient for me at the time.
 
I loved Avenue at the time and You’re In A Bad Way and Who Do You Think You Are sealed the deal. I only had singles until Too Young To Die, though.
 
I had Pale Movie and Like A Motorway on CASSINGLE, and then picked up Tiger Bay for about £2 in Poland in summer 1994. I think my only other Et purchase was Sylvie.

And since it is of course a cover, what must their own record collections be like..

 
I'm sure the likes of You're In A Bad Way and Who Do You Think You Are were taped off the radio, and then Hug My Soul was on a free Donkey Kong compilation so I got quite obsessed with that.

I must have got Too Young To Die for Xmas/birthday 95.
