I can try and do a rip but you aren't missing a lot Shee. It is unsurprisingly peak noodle, and the last very long track just annoying noise.

Bring on the bangers!
 
Oh I'll get round to it, I'm sure, thank you. I can rip it myself when I'm actually arsed to! :D

But YES, BANGERS. Considering we had Home Counties before these last two noodley albums, we really need them back into dance mode.
 
I'm sure ten days will fly by. They say good things come to those who wait, or in this case things that sound pretty much as you would expect.
 
After reading this Pitchfork review I thought to myself 'Oh I must give this a listen when it comes out tomorrow'.

Didn't even realise it had already been out for a week. :bruised:

Midweek #71 indeed.

OUCH.

But I think they probably haven't included the MESS of physicals they shipped themselves, given that they all went out a couple of weeks ago.
 
The actual shipping has been a disaster. Loads of orders cancelled/ unfulfilled, duplicate orders sent out, promised free CDs not showing up in half the packages and a friend who HAD a duplicate order and duly returned it as asked then got another one a few days later. I ordered two copies of both the black and Coke bottle vinyls, all separately so I got multiple free CDs (they said "CD per order, not per item"). All came individually but then ended up with a third black vinyl somehow, which I returned, only for a second package with a black and a Coke bottle vinyl to appear a week later.

Utter chaos.
 
And I still can't get into the album. It feels twee, arch and there's too much "arty spoken word" for my liking.

There were no copies in the shops. HMV had one CD at £14.99 (lol no) and the indie shop had sold out after receiving less than expected and selling out through advance orders online.

That's what they get for releasing on Friday 13th....
 
Yeah, I don't think you can even get a copy on the likes of Amazon.

It's strange, as they marketed it as a proper album rather than a fan club release, but then didn't really make it available anywhere. I feel like it would have been received much better as a fan club release too.

The reviews I have seen have been really positive though. I hope they aren't encouraged by the warm critical response (and that of the last album) to make more albums without proper choruses.

I did think a couple of songs would sound quite good given the Burnt Out Car treatment but I am just ready for the apparently more exciting LP due next year.
 
Aren’t we just at a stage where anything they release is going to get a good review, though?
 
I spent a couple of years asking their manager about their backcat going onto streaming (tbh we all need those Trouser Enthusiasts remixes of Sylvie) in addition to nudging them about Words And Music coming off streaming and finally heard back in early 2021 with a rather shirty email saying (in addition to streaming doesn’t pay the bills) all their backcat would be on streaming by the end of 2021.

I’m sure streaming doesn’t pay the bills, but it’s surely better than NOTHING when it’s your back catalogue that can’t be bought new ANYWAY.

That catalogue is so vast and immense anyway and so little has been handled digitally properly. So many vinyl/ fan club/ CD only exclusives. Even I find it difficult to keep up.
 
It's a very modern condition. The limited fanclub releases and special editions are what keep the gas in the car and the dinner on the table. It's the same with Nurse With Wound - Steve Stapleton does hand made covers for test pressings and they sell quickly at €500-600 amd that's what keeps him going.
 
But I said it earlier on- the physical fan base is already there. They lap up everything in seconds, even "normal" releases that will be on streaming. They don't NEED to then ringfence everything later on.

They never do the test pressing route either. They've normally donated those to charity shops and done a "hunt for it" thing. It's the one part of Etienne collecting that has always annoyed me, as it's often London centric.
 
I should say that Stapleton is a genuinely renowned visual artist in the relevant circles so people are really paying for a Stapleton original but something happens when it's sold as a record rather than as a piece of art, I don't really understand it tho'.

Part of it is that collector culture. If something is limited, people buy it now. If it isn't, they might leave it and buy something else instead saying "I'll come back for that" and, of course, they never do. So there's a very weird balance where the product has to be limited enough to be desirable otherwise, the market is so saturated that people may never return to pick up the 'unlimited' item.

Weird times.
 
And tbh when was the last time they put a ton of backcat stuff onto a new limited edition physical release?
 
Managed to get the bonus cd without a hitch (but still not listened)
