The no.1 album last week fell out the charts completely. Streaming really took the charts, said FUCK THIS and said MAKE IT RANDOM.

They did! It's arguably not really their fault that Rein Me in keeps gaining in streaming weeks so far in to reset a relatively fair way of deciding whether something is just hanging around and stinking the place out when it's not really that relevant anymore. It still has a following - it's just barely anything else is rivalling it at the minute. The charts are quite stagnant at the moment because, well, nobody else really seems that interested in releasing new stuff that sticks compared to usual. We're due a big release clearout this autumn.
 
It’s a wider problem not just a mathematical problem. If they chucked out all the catalogue songs it might actively encourage labels to see the charts as an opportunity to promote singles again. It’s not that singles don’t exist it’s that the number of relevant ones has fallen off a cliff.

They need to take control of it, and make a chart that promotes NEW music again, not just succumb to the streaming behaviour and fiddle with the equation every few years hoping for a miracle.
 
Tinkering with the maths clearly isn't going to work, or at least would only defer making a bigger decision further down the line.

They need to make a much more fundamental decision in terms of what they want to chart to be, because at the moment, I don't see any indication that they care in either the album or the singles chart. And make big moves to support that.
 
We've said it so many times, but they really need to have a recurrents chart for stuff that's e.g. been charting for 2 years, that can only be broken out of if there's a resurgence in streams that's enough to get something into the top 20/the record label validates it as a 're-release' or whatever. Make allowances for songs that have proper Running Up That Hill, Wonderwall type resurgences that genuinely reflect something happening in popular culture (as always used to happen over the years in the charts) or reflect a boost after an artist's death. But we don't need the chart clogged by Mr Brightside, Don't Stop Believing, Iris and the likes.

(but I will also add that none of this would really be taking out Rein Me In, or deals with the bigger broader problem, which is that following the charts is now an intensely niche minority pursuit. How much promotional value do the charts really have anymore in this day and age? It's something we'd love to see, but would it really make that much difference? Still worth doing nonetheless, imo.)
