Sam Ryder - There's Nothing But Space, Man! (album out now)

I really expected more than #35 (and midweek #89 this week) given the start he had on iTunes and prime spot in the final. And according to kworb, it's not charting anywhere else apart from the UK.

The fact it entered the top 40 at all based on sales alone was a miracle. He said he isn’t a streaming type of artist and that’s ok.

I’m quite surprised. The album seems like it did as well as could have realistically been expected. Maybe they spent a fortune marketing it.
 
The album was a decent success but perhaps they’ve sussed that the chances of matching that in the future are negligible.
 
I guess he had so many huge promo moments over the last year as well, which he's realistically unlikely to get similar again. If they did spend a fortune (or even if they didn't), surely it's going to be diminishing returns in terms of sales. And when he hasn't managed to land a second hit despite all that promo opportunities, it doesn't augur well.
 
It will be interesting to see what sort of career he manages to sustain as a live act.
 
If he starts lessons now, he could easily win next year’s Strictly.

Perhaps I'm being unrealistic, but I do think there is probably still quite an appetite for him - the NYE show getting such good figures shows that, and I'm sure whenever he's had a big promo opp like the platinum jubilee thing or royal variety, he always gets good reviews on social media. But hardly any fucker buys albums any more.
 
I know it was released months before he was even announced for Eurovision, but I find it odd that More basically did nothing for him at any point, other than popping up in the closing moments of an insurance (?? or was it vitamins??) advert.

I'm not sure if it got any sort of push post-Spaceman too, but if not it should have - it felt like his biggest crowdpleaser.

And yes I think telly beckons. He's so likeable we can pretty much all look past the silly hair.
 
I agree More sounded like it should have been a hit of some kind.

Hope this doesn't dissuade strong artists from representing us in future, as for the last 18 months he's been held up as a "look what Eurovision can do for your career!" example.
 
I will defend Sam(:D!!!). I think people need to remember that the ones that signed Sam (unwillingly) left after the huge Warner Music restructure earlier in the year. The people that signed him and were behind his A&R and his success didn’t intend on him being a chart/streaming artist even after Eurovision. The new team probably wanted to change it and he doesn’t.

The song he recorded with Brian May would never be allowed if it wasn’t for Ted Lasso. He’s definitely still recording music as he said he’s been with Aitch this week (I know, of all people :eyes:). He said it’s freeing to be in the studio with artists that he just really gets along with.

“More” is for an ongoing Vodafone campaign he’s the EVO ambassador and probably got paid a nice cheque for it.

In all seriousness, this seems like a very stupid decision and he will surely be signed somewhere else relatively quickly
 
It is a bit strange because Warner Music have always sung his praises. However it probably hasn’t helped that the Parlophone president, co-president, A&R and audience engagement manager all left around May/June.

As for Mae I am honestly shocked her album hasn’t been cancelled.
 
Becky Hill and Ella Henderson can't do them all, I suppose.
 
Not a fan but he’s pretty graceful and diplomatic considering he was probably working with a great team that he had rapport with and had developed his sound and brand, and they were all made redundant, and how he’s with a bunch of people who don’t know him, don’t get him, no synergy, and of course it’s the artist’s fault if the momentum is lost.

Ah music industry, never change.
