@Floppet how old is Ridley now? Is he drinking anymore than normal? Or having diarrhea?

Also, could you try making a ramp for him to get up and down the steps?

He's 12 coming up for 13 which is a really good age for such a mahoosive dog, his life expectancy was only 10-12 years. He's drinking normally (3-4 pints of water a day) and his outside toiletting is as it always has been, he even still cocks his leg (but sometimes wees on his own foot because the right one doesn't lift up as high any more :D). I considered whether a ramp would be suitable while I was at home after the hospital but our garden is really short and there's a two-feet-plus drop down into the garden so a straight ramp would be too steep for him (because the back fence is in the way) and I'd have to do a sideways one that would take up most of the garden for it to be any help for him whatsoever. The ramp was my first thought until I did the maths for it. Then I researched hydraulic scissor-lifts but due to the size I'd need I was looking at over a grand for the largest, cheapest trolley version and that wouldn't hold my weight, nevermind Mr F, so it was unworkable as neither of us would be able to go into the garden without jumping down and my knees would break if I did that.

It's basically his arthritic hips causing the problem with the one that he had mended as a puppy causing the most problems because it's no longer attached to his body (he had a femoral-head excision). We've know this was coming for a while and at his last vet check up in March the vet said that he had lots of lumps and bumps under his skin but it wasn't really worth investigating further unless I insisted because he can never get his wasted muscle back on his thighs and he's so old now that there'd be no point to any treatment if cancer was found. Even his tail-gland adenoma has flattened out which means he's got barely any testosterone left in him.

He's still happy in himself and while he is I'll do everything that I can for him to keep his good quality of life but the moment he starts being in pain or showing signs that he might be we've already decided it'll be a last visit to the vet for him. Spawn's been for a visit today and Ridley was running around like a puppy, albeit his back legs kept splaying out on the kitchen lino but he kept getting up and carrying on like it was no big deal. He was still running between our legs for bumsmacks too.

Old dogs always get lumps and bumps, I definitely agree it's not worth investigating.

Is he on any pain relief or joint supplements?

On the way to the restaurant for dinner Mr F said to me "it doesn't feel like a Saturday" so I replied "that's because it's Sunday".
On Friday night I was talking to a friend about some teaching applications that we should do within a certain deadline and told her "let's do them tomorrow or even better on Saturday" and she goes "but tomorrow is Saturday" 🤷‍♂️

He's been on Previcox 227mg for nearly all of his life since the hip op but was reduced from 1.5 tablets a day to 1 tablet back in March due to his weight loss. He also has Tralieve, 200mg morning and 200mg at night (dog Tramadol) and he has YuMove+ for senior dogs, 4 tablets per day.

Ah that's good, he's on plenty of pain relief then.

I hate it when pets get old. I've been so stressed about heathcliff the last few weeks that it almost makes pet ownership not worthwhile!
