whenever whatever did feel like an event but then so did waiting for tonight. even moreso actually. shakira's just younger and more likable unfortunately in this case.
 
I thought Hips don't like was way more popular in the US, what am I missing?
 
i quite like waka waka. it's probably one of the songs i'm most ashamed to admit to liking and there really are not many of those.
 
Whenever, Wherever is a bulletproof 00s classic that nobody has forgotten. Waiting For Tonight has never been that! (still a classic gay interest banger of course)
 
I hate the term 'guilty pleasure' but Waka Waka is almost exactly that for me.

You are entitled to prefer one song over the other but saying WW is 'blander' than WfT just isn't true babes. WW is musically a lot more interesting, it even has a fucking ANDEAN FLUTE in it! Waiting... is all GENERIC TOD TERRY 90s CLUB BEATS and 5 seconds of Spanish guitar at the beginning because she's Latino you know. It could have been sung by anyone. WW still sounds like a one-off today and is 100% Shakira down to the KOOKY lyrics.

actually you're right, it's not blander, i just don't like it and actively hate the parts that make it not bland (said whistle, her voice and the yodelling[?]).

that wasn't meant to be an ironic reply. i genuinely thought of it as more mainstream than it was. maybe it was just down to it coming around the same time as slave 4 you (right?) and hearing them next to each all the time on american radio (i was in the states that summer) that made me think of it that way.

actually i discovered shakira around ojos asi (they were playing it on mcm!) and when ww came out i kinda thought oh she's gone britney.
 
the beginning of the end? :D Shakira had an excellent career and quality control up to and including 2010, WW came out in 2001
 
Shakira's first two international albums are very different from what she started doing from Laundry Service onwards. She was total BANSHEE territory earlier in her career but after she met the Estefans in 1998 her music started to change, then in 2001 she dyed her hair blonde and started singing in English and shaking her arse on camera and a little bit of GAY TEENAGER ME died. To this day you still find a lot of Spanish-speaking people pinning for the 'old Shakira'.

I still find a lot of things to like about her in her noughties stuff, but it just wasn't the same. Also, she's a massive tax dodger so there's that too.
 
That was pretty much spectacular and I loved both ladies but Jlo really did pee all over that stage. I screamed.
Both incredible though.

Anyways, I finally got round to watch this PERF and I do not know how anyone with a passing interest in Latin music can describe it as NOTHING LESS THAN AN ABSOLUTE TRIUMPH. J-Lo perhaps erred on the side of AMERICAN SLUT POP a bit too much for my liking but that's her thing anyway. Shakira was FLAWLESS - she even turned Chantaje into something LISTENABLE with a jazzy arrangement! QUEEN.
 
She Wolf was Shakira at her summit for me, I wish she had collaborated more with those guys (unless she did and I'm not up to date). Even if I detested the lyrics, Men In This Town and also Gypsy were just as good.

I thought it was good, if a bit all over the place, but that was to be expected with them trying to cram in all the songs and sharing the top billing

I stayed up and watched in live and was thinking J.Lo was going to topple over a couple of times, was giving me Madonna at the Brits vibes, quite uncomfortable
 
After surviving the pole and introducing us to all her party people, I was surprised by the wobble at the end. Now had it been Gloria giving her a shove for not being invited to get loud it would have been the perfect Latin blow out.
 
the halftime show is now at 95m (!) views on youtube, almost as many as the original broadcast itself. GIRL POWER LIVES :disco:
