where to START? :D the queen of superfluous punctuation returned five years after Come on Over with a THIRD consecutive diamond record—19 tracks about women in space, credit card debt, dinner dates with wandering eyes, dieting and exfoliating, and much more besides—was this her social issues album? :eyes: not quite. I'm pretty sure they threw EVERYTHING THEY HAD on the tracklist. score the songs and let's talk about Up!

00 Up!
00 I'm Gonna Getcha Good!
00 She's Not Just a Pretty Face
00 Juanita
00 Forever and For Always
00 Ain't No Particular Way
00 It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing
00 Nah!
00 (Wanna Get to Know You) That Good!

00 I Ain't Goin' Down
00 I'm Not in the Mood (To Say No)!
00 In My Car (I'll Be the Driver)
00 When You Kiss Me

WHAT AN ALBUM!

I listened to it while driving (yes it was a long journey) a few weeks ago and really loved every second. Even the songs that I was a bit meh on I loved. And I can't pretend I didn't sing In My Car (I'll Be The Driver) at the top of my lungs as I hit my foot on the pedal!

07 Up!
10 I'm Gonna Getcha Good!
08 She's Not Just a Pretty Face
08 Juanita
09 Forever and For Always
08 Ain't No Particular Way
11 It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing
10 Nah!

10 I'm Jealous
10 Ka-ching!

10 What a Way to Wanna Be!
07 I Ain't Goin' Down
08 I'm Not in the Mood (To Say No)!
08 In My Car (I'll Be the Driver)
07 When You Kiss Me

really though I'm very fascinated by this album. I get that she'd earned the right to make a "having fun! loving life!" kinda record, but it really is incredibly vacuous front to back :D I think there are maybe 2-3 songs (When You Kiss Me, Forever and For Always, Thank You Baby) that could be considered personal to her. and those songs are all fantastic.

obviously it is a lot of fun though. bloated, but plenty of brilliant pop songwriting on display here, with more than a hint of MADNESS. country version is where it's at.

08 Up!

When You Kiss Me must have been a Come On Over leftover right? it sounds nothing like this album and very similar to From This Moment On.

It’s hard to be objective about an album I listened to daily between the ages of 7 and 10, but I’ll try:

10 Up!
09 I'm Gonna Getcha Good!
07 She's Not Just a Pretty Face
07 Juanita (wtf even is this)
10 Forever and For Always
09 Ain't No Particular Way
10 It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing (the gay drama of it)
10 Nah!
07 (Wanna Get to Know You) That Good!
10 C'est la vie
08 I'm Jealous
15 Ka-ching! (Is there a better critique of America that is also so ridiculous?)
07 Thank You Baby! (For Makin' Someday Come So Soon)
10 Waiter! Bring Me Water!
11 What a Way to Wanna Be! (:D)
11 I Ain't Goin' Down (I love this one so so much)
08 I'm Not in the Mood (To Say No)!
09 In My Car (I'll Be the Driver)
05 When You Kiss Me (this one was boring for me as a kid)

She's always been better when she's in character, surely? I don't expect much from Come On Over was hugely personal either. I don't see her with BLACK EYES OR BLUE TEARS!

I can’t believe Ka-Ching exists, but the world is so much better because of it

I do agree Come On Over was largely in character too, but I think it was a more nuanced character. those songs were massive because they somehow felt universal and intimately sincere. whereas Up! is extremely broad in a less satisfying way, I think.

So many numbers - so many songs to rate.

"I don't wanna wear that"

It's just occurred to me that this is like fitting room pop, she just tries everything on (and it mostly all looks amazing). Anyway, let that settle in and on with the rate:

08 Up! - When, now, without the anguish. The "yeah eee yeah eee yeah" is the stronger hook among quite a few!
10 I'm Gonna Getcha Good! - what an absurd music video, "you're a fine peice of real estate and I'm gonna get me some man", the bridge and chorus that no longer feels the ground. I've never got tired of this!
07 She's Not Just a Pretty Face - middling, but fine. It's probably cruel, but I do add the lyric "she's.. also got lymes disease" (because (I'm horrible!))
06 Juanita - I blame Santino, the ex Drage Race judge and the musician!
07 Forever and For Always - lovely, sure, but not for my palette!
05 Ain't No Particular Way - we've reached a lull!
07 It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing - the trick is to keep remembering to breathe when listening. Oh it's fine!
07 Nah! Kudos for the Gloria Estefan sound machine men groans!
10 (Wanna Get to Know You) That Good! - beyond the glossy gimmicks is someone who really pulls off straightforward glossy guitar pop, a low key gem!
07 C'est la vie - I hear the tiny patter of tiny feet. No it's not Shania's bff sneaking out before being seen, it's the lovely intro to this not awful pop song!
09 I'm Jealous - slowmotion devotion that finally stands out!
08 Ka-ching! - without this we'd have no Paper Planes by M.I.A or that horrible incident in Greggs where Michellle McManus threw the till at the cashier when short changed after buying a box of Yum Yums. Oddly undercooked, it's practically minimalist!
10 Thank You Baby! (For Makin' Someday Come So Soon) - "check it out!" Blockbuster pop, so towering and with that bluster of guitar it's probably the best thing she ever did! Roxette levels of cylinders being fired!
10 Waiter! Bring Me Water! - fucking iconic. The song is a surge of nonsense (bring it on! (and I wouldn't have it any other way!))
11 What a Way to Wanna Be! - Heat magazine the musical (starring Loraine Kelly and sponsored by pentapeptides). I take it back, this is her best!
06 I Ain't Goin' Down - an unflushabble floater then!
07 I'm Not in the Mood (To Say No)! - the album needed a jump start and here they are (the next 2 are the same song twice). Uh uh!
07 In My Car (I'll Be the Driver) - a throwaway throwback I can't be mad with. Fine I'll make a pun, the album is running out of gas somewhat!
09 When You Kiss Me - a better wedding song than From this Moment On, but it's so self conscious about it (and is that really something to complain about on a Shania album? No it is not!)[/B]

Thank You Baby! might be my favorite song off this album, it's just so joyous and DRAMATIC at the same time.
it's amazing. tbh it feels heartfelt and full of genuine emotion and that's why it stands above most of the record. the verses are sublimely gorgeous.

Listening to it again and I'm officially upgrading I'm Not Going Down to 13/10 on this Sunday afternoon.
Peace, love & beautiful memories to all my Mopsy Twainers

I Ain’t Going Down is so good. All of us who had a baby at 15, who’s daddy’s never forgave us, can relate

I used to think it was really bloated at the time (well of course it is) but time has made me appreciate how she just went to the kitchen cupboard, had a quick look and simply decided to empty the ENTIRE CONTENTS in a bag and serve it up as one ridiculous body of work.

Also who can forget the International Version with generic ethnic beats plonked across each song be damned whether it worked or not (and it often did, it improves Forever and For Always and I'm not sorry about it).

These are all 10s:

10 I'm Gonna Getcha Good!
10 Nah!
10 (Wanna Get to Know You) That Good!
10 I'm Jealous
10 Ka-ching!
50 Thank You Baby! (For Makin' Someday Come So Soon)
10 Waiter! Bring Me Water!
10 What a Way to Wanna Be!

Thank You Baby! is pure magnificent pop and Wanna Get To Know You is my underrated gem from the album. Gorgeous yet hooks aplenty.

Also I think Up! is the worst song on the album

Everything about this album, the songs, the lyrics and the videos screams DEMENTED POP but all the better for it.

It's probably Lisa Barlow's favourite album of her twenties.

KA-CHING! Love thaaat!
