Stark and lush, the illuminating strings and Ama's lithe and dulcet vocals spiral together in the most beautiful, romantic and haunting manner. The song is lit by moonlight and caressed by the shadows it moves in and out of. What a darting, dashing dance these two components have together. So much lustre, so much to swoon over. I think being a double a-side with the Divine Comedy held it back (although I've always been fond on Marvellous Party it must be said). And some remixes wouldn't have gone amiss. I'm always on the look out for old films that feature mirrors in striking ways so this video really ticks my boxes too.

I bought the single at the time. Funnily I was playing this YESTERDAY

Me too on both accounts.

Did she ever do any live performances of it? I remember the Divine Comedy got TFI Friday, with Neil Hannon laughing (understandably) when going back to the verses.

Really rather good. It actually sounds a bit ahead of it’s time as far as when this ‘sound’ was big in the charts. Still to missing the top 20 was appalling.

I actually only discovered this during lockdown when I went back and researched all the hits from the 80s and 90s. One of the better discoveries. She had a few latter career gems that prove there was still quality even after her star had faded a bit.
