finally launching next weekend :o

the cast seem fun





she is co-hosting weekend update and seems fabulous
 
I think I only recognise three of the cast, the two Taskmaster alumni and Larry Deen. But I guess that's the point.

Really they just need to get a viral moment or three to justify their existence.
 
Can't remember the last time a new venture felt more doomed than this. Maybe that Change UK party with the group shot in Nando's?

Would happily be wrong but it feels like the only moment to go viral will be some snarky cunt clipping a flop moment from Saturday's show out of context with a "What are we doing here exactly" type caption
 
yes they are. the format will be the same as the US including musical guest I believe.

  • everything I've seen about it so far
  • the previous attempt to launch an SNL in the UK
  • previous attempts to ape American formats here (remember The Nightly Show? I know there've been more)
  • the fact that if SNL US launched now it would probably be snarked out of existence
  • the UK press, public and wider media landscape here
  • the fact that nobody watches Sky live and NOW TV has a relatively small base too
  • the fact that it'll surely cost an awful lot and returns will need to be high

I'll be pleased if it does slap and become a hit, but it just feels like chances are slight

Even disregarding the connections he must have to various people involved in the production of these things, I think his default mode tends to be giving new formats a chance and wanting them to succeed, so I’m not surprised he wasn’t outwardly sceptical about it.
 
Marina fucking hates SNL.

I only watch the cold open and the news desk. The cold open was shit last night.

some good points and I do think it being on Sky rather than, say, ITV is a big barrier to finding an audience. but I also think if it's good and available on YouTube it could find an audience.
 
Also the thing about SNL (and what’s given the US version a new lease of life) is how clippable it is, so if it manages to find an audience for the sketches on YouTube and socials then it won’t just fly or sink based on straightforward viewing figures.
 
That does feel like its best chance. It's going to take some properly good material and probably a lot of smart collabs + paid social support to make it pop off

Tina Fey is their first guest host, which feels pretty wise. I wonder if they'll put any of the sketches on the regular SNL social accounts, at least to start off with, too?
 
Tina Fey hosting first is kinda massive!!! that's a perfect pick. she's never not funny.
 
Yes bit dubious this is on SKY, It just feels its going to get lost. I'm sure they are banking on viral clips doing the rounds more than anything. We will see.

It feels like no one wants anything to succeed, we're just going to be stuck with Father Ted repeats for the next 50 years.
 
I’m taking a punt on this being SURPRISINGLY GOOD despite the general British consensus being they hope it fails, as if our nation isn’t in PERENNIAL DECLINE already!
 
While I’m not all that enthusiastic, I’ve seen so many people say they’ve never heard of any of the cast. No shit. Who the hell had ever heard of Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy etc. before they were on SNL?

If the cast was made up of the same comedians that already rotate around every UK comedy show, what would be the point?
