So it looks like the S Club revival is really happening...

Perhaps I'm looking back through rose tinted spex but I never found the Boyzone gigs to be crass as such. They were after Stephen died and life (sadly) goes on. At all the concerts I've been to post Stephen, there's always been a really lovely tribute to him. I genuinely do think Stephen would have wanted them to carry on. They all still post on his birthday and anniversary and at random times when they're thinking about him.

I'm not criticising Boyzone per se. I largely agree; I think the album and tour was handled quite respectfully.

I just didn't want it to come across like I was holding S Club to an unreasonable standard when they are doing something other acts have done in similar circumstances. It's just in this case - perhaps because their previous reunion endeavours have been such transparently cynical money-grabs - that slapping a new name on the tour and sticking with the original dates feels wrong.

I can totally see why Hannah doesn’t want to take part, and would assume this will be the last thing they do as a group. Changing the name to S Club doesn’t really sit right with me. I know they did change their name to S Club after he quit the band, but surely as he was still part of this until he sadly passed away they should have carried on as S Club 7?

I think they would most likely have kept the name if Hannah had been onboard

I'm inclined to agree. Dropping the "7" with only Paul absent would obviously be perceived as massively disrespectful; but Hannah has opted out by choice and I think it'd come across as a slightly callous to just pretend like she doesn't matter to the branding (even if it's largely true from a vocal perspective). There's also a part of me that wonders whether continuing as S Club gives them some leeway if anyone else pulls out. After watching that video, I could imagine at least one other member changing their mind at some point.

I don’t think it is callous at all and regardless if Hannah was present or not I feel that whoever is orchestrating the whole thing had made the executive decision to go back to S Club after Pauls passing. We are all surmising, but realistically this is all to make a quick buck, and when a member died before the tour I personally feel that the most respectful thing to do would be to cancel the whole thing altogether.

If they didn’t want to do it they wouldn’t be forced to do it. Those reactions were genuine. They were never good actors.

Perhaps they want to do it for the fans and to remember Paul?

CYNICAL OLD ME thinks they are doing it for the £££. I can see why as it is likely the last thing they will do as a larger group, as it will probably be back to Bradley, Tina and the girls from S Club Juniors doing the uni circuits.

Would the uni circuits even be viable for them anymore? Even the youngest of kids who grew up with S Club Juniors are themselves long past uni age now.

I think they were doing them as well as local festivals up until even after the reunion tour was announced.

Is it really a big issue if they are doing it for the money, at least partly? I think for Hannah, it’s all a bit too much, she was closest to Paul and she’s had health issues of her own to deal with. But I don’t look down on the others going ahead with the tour. We all have bills to pay and food to buy.

Nobody said it was an issue Kala, did they? As I said I can see why they are doing it as it is probably the last big pay day as a group. 🤷‍♀️

Well plenty above have said negative things about the tour going ahead.

I personally think the most respectful thing to do would be to cancel this, and then regroup in time with a new tour that Paul was not meant to be part of. In my opinion the whole thing was a money making exercise and their is nothing wrong with that, but after Paul has passed away before the tour he was meant to be part of has taken place I think the most respectful thing to do would be to cancel it due to these unforeseen circumstances.

That's exactly my perspective on the situation. Cancel it, do a one-off tribute gig if absolutely necessary, and come back a year down the line with something that wasn't conceived around this being a 7-piece reunion.

It's not the group doing a tour that sticks in my throat; in fact, I completely get that while Hannah doesn't want to take part, the others might need to throw themselves into this as a means of staying close and processing what's happened. It's everything that goes along with this tour, like the merchandising. A lot of money will be spun from that (very little going in the group's direction, I shouldn't think) and selling overpriced t-shirts, keyrings, mugs, etc. branded with a tour named in tribute to someone who's recently died feels pretty shameless.

I think I have asked this before and I am very much wearing a tinfoil hat while surmising about this but if it was suicide with Paul could the reason it wasn’t disclosed be something to do with this tour? Or am I thinking too much in to things (probably).

We’re talking about respect here but the only people who really need to be respected are the band members and Paul’s family. Perhaps they spoke to his family and they agreed that the tour could go ahead?

As for the cause of Paul’s death, we will never know the reason behind it, Hannah said he was so happy about the tour so it could be something entirely unrelated.

I would say Paul’s family first and foremost, and a respectful thing to do would be to ask his family. If that happened? WHO KNOWS?

Usually cause of death is disclosed especially if it was a health issue relatively quickly after the person has died. I find it strange that cause of death hasn’t been disclosed.

Seriously, why are we calling them out for being “crass” when we know fuck all of what has gone on? They will all have contracts which they might not be able to get out of easily- in terms of promoters, merchandisers, record companies (didn’t someone somewhere say there was new material?).

That video wasn’t “at gunpoint”, it was obviously just massively sad.

I think what’s MORE CRASS is calling someone out for their reaction and response to the death of one of their band mate, berating them for going ahead because their music isn’t serious enough and debating whether they’re just in it for the cash when we know fuck all.

I mean, seriously, Paul died shortly after being slagged off by the world for not looking like his 20s self and there’s constant talk about treating with kindness and yet hear we are again.

I despair.

They are public figures, and people are always going to discuss and speculate. The bottom line is none of us know anything, and if anything I have said comes across aa unkind then I apologise as that was not my intention.

I don't THINK anyone is laying into THEM.

Just to be absolutely clear, the thing I feel most strongly about is the wider business of a tour and all the stuff that is LIKELY to go along with it, such as merchandise, VIP packages, etc.

As I said above, Hannah doesn't want to do it, the others do (at the moment). It's not a binary right/wrong decision, and in some respects I completely understand the appeal of having something to focus on. I don't think anyone has berated them or implied that they're EVIL.

I, personally, wish someone at a management level had said: "If you want/need to do this, let's do it, but not now and not like this" because in all likelihood, the decision probably wasn't ever wholly in S Club's hands.

Do you think there might be insurance issues and liabilities they’d have to pay to cancel? Maybe the contracts weren’t written very well. It’s not like they’ve got big names labels and management behind them.

Is Simon Fuller not involved anymore?

Thanks for this post @Sheena, I echo this entirely, you put it into better words than I could have done.

Did someone not say in here that it was most likely suicide as the cause of death hadn’t been disclosed? I did find that strange and couldn’t really remember a case when a celebrity death hadn’t been disclosed before.

All their music has been migrated to be credited to S Club on Spotify

EXCEPT Seeing Double, the one album recorded as S Club. That's still under S Club 7 🥴

Also it seems Hannah is taking legal advice re her departure

It's all just so grubby

The thread title was rather PRESCIENT WAS IT NOT 🔮

I don't think it is grubby, necessarily. Presumably she signed a contract which needs resolving, and I imagine there may be things to iron out regarding future sales.

I'm choosing to see it just as good business sense after a tragic event.

This must be why Hannah was kicked out! It'll have been planned for a while, surely

Released to coincide with the tour too... :ClaudiaPopcorn:

Why would she be kicked out for that? Surely she can release a book if she wants :o
