Sophie Ellis Bextor’s Friday Night Disco

I have to say I absolutely LOVE THIS. I have watched them all back on YouTube and she is so effortlessly elegant even with her harem of children running around her while she sings. She makes it all look so easy.

QUEEN.

This is the most work she has done in years

She must be exhausted
She’s loving it though. She even did an after party tonight because she wanted to sing a Julie Andrews song. I think she needs it at the minute. Nerina Pallot is the same every Thursday, albeit with a different style of show.

I’m obsessed with the PERPETUALLY HAUNTED Sonny.

Poor love, always carrying a child about. In the absence of this week's on Youtube I am rewatching her birthday party and I swear I caught Sonny ACTUALLY SMILING when one of the small children had an accident.

Also Young Blood performed by the potted plants was slightly overshadowed by the mighty Crying at the Discotheque on first viewing, but it was very lovely.

If You Go #Lockdownmix obviously after a fabulous Take me Home

OMG she finally acknowledged the existence of IF YOU GO! :disco: If only she had done that FIFTEEN YEARS AGO (?) when it clearly should have been the follow up single to Catch You instead of whatever actually was.

+ Bittersweet too :disco:

I generally HATE CHILDREN but I loved watching this :disco:

She appears to have a son that is a TEENAGER? (How many sons does she HAVE?! There seems to be SO MANY!)

Imagine if Sophie Ellis Bextor was your Mum, doing this on Instagram each week! Would you be proud, cringing, terrified or ALL OF THE ABOVE!

My interest in Sophie was really at an all-time low after the disappointing Familia and the utterly pointless Orchestral Greatest Hits, but I've been right back on board with her recently.

The orchestral thing was dire, but I really enjoyed the last couple of proper albums I must say. I much prefer pop/dance Sophie though! It's truly where she excels.

Oh I think Wanderlust is MAGNIFICENT, possibly her best album - it's tight between that and Trip The Light Fantastic.

But Familia was largely a bland bore by comparison, sadly.

Ok so I’m stuck in a YouTube loop watching these now :D

She actually has SO MUCH GOOD STUFF in her back-cat.

It’s an actual homophobic crime that her version of Yes Sir, I Can Boogie wasn’t a full-blown single, it would have been a massive, massive hit!

Sonny is sixteen, oldest of five.

An early shot of the happy young family:

OMG did she actually release the orchestral greatest hits?! I thought that was still stuck in no-mans land :D Didn’t it cost an absolute fortune?

It didn't sound like it. :D

Wanderlust and Familia are both pretty wonderful, the former slightly more so admittedly, but some wonderful stuff on Familia too.

Wow that performance of If You Go is MAGICAL

her spoken word interludes ("don't let him play with the router") in between singing the lines of any given song are ICONIC! I must watch the rest of these immediately

OMG for such a gorgeous gorgeous woman, what a HIDEOUS cover!

Did she take inspiration from the second NATASHA BEDINGFIELD album?!

OMG like magic she just performed her version of Yes Sir I Can Boogie in the Kitchen Disco I’m watching (from WEEKS AGO :eyes: )

How was this skipped over as a single :D Granted it would have been another cover, but I honestly think it probably would have been a number 1

I think I played The Song Diaries once. I have dug it out now and will bung on the three disco tracks tacked on the end tomorrow as they were the clear highlights.

Yes I always cringe when I think about how much of a money pit the GH must have been. And it wasn't even any good! :(

I have heard figures suggesting the project cost over 100K just to record which really is QUITE A LOT for an artist like SEB, particularly before mastering, artwork and promotion is brought into account.

Perhaps that’s why it didn’t get any promotion that I’m aware of :D

It's disgusting that it should have to come to this, but I do feel strongly that 'Young Blood' is just a well-timed sadboi cover away from becoming a proper standard. It's so lovely.

Babe she just started performing this next to a shelf of POTTED PLANTS :D

I watched this last night after the Kylie sesh and it was FABULOUS, I had a big grin on my face throughout

I love how confused she looks at the end of Mixed Up World and says "That was a really weird ending." QUEEN OF PREPARATION!

I’ve put on Shoot From The Hip for my early afternoon stroll.

I Won’t Change You still GHASTLY :D (but somewhat endearingly so)

I put it on this morning while I was doing some housework too. Not one of her albums that I have really gone back to much, but it is not bad at all. Making Music's bonus track status is plainly not right.

I can’t say I’m in a MAD RUSH to revisit SFTH, but does Party In My Head still sound UTTERLY BONKERS? As it remember it, it sounded like two completely different songs playing at the same time :D

I do like SEB and know enough up to certain point. I need someone to make a playlist of her DEEP GROOVES.

At least half of her best songs are on Trip The Light Fantastic to be fair. AN ALBUM. The one-two punch of If You Go and Today The Sun's On Us is really too much :disco: god the single choices really did not do that album justice.

Oh yes I know that one. If You Go is an all time fave.

Ooh do you know I NEVER really investigated the Wanderlust/Familia remix packages.

Added those two and will check out. Any more recommendations?

Her version of Yes Sir, I Can Boogie not being on Spotify is such a missed opportunity. Tagging @aquaplex
