Though yes, the later incarnations were much much worse. Enterprise is Rick Berman/Branon Braga at their wankfest worst.

Star Trek Discovery is commonly abbreviated to Disco, including on the show itself sometimes:

Voyager was fun enough, but it usually felt quite lightweight and it could have made more of the premise of the ship being stranded halfway across the galaxy - a lot of the episodes could have just been written for TNG with minimal changes. When Ronald D. Moore briefly worked on the show he wanted to really show the challenges they faced, with the ship getting damaged over time and being patched up with local technology, problems caused on one episode carrying on in later ones etc, but Berman and Braga were still in the 'reset things at the end of each episode' mindset for the most part (Moore would later create the Battlestar Galactica reboot, which I assume more than scratched those particular itches for him :tongueout:)
 
This is back today, I can't wait to watch when I get home! I rewatched season one recently (mostly over last weekend) and it actually worked really well as a binge watch, probably better than watching it weekly.
 
Well that was pretty brilliant, I thought - a really strong way of reintroducing everyone while also setting up quite a lot of stuff for this season. I absolutely loved that we got quite a bit of proper Starfleet stuff, seeing the Stargazer and all those other ships felt a bit porny for me :eyes: And don't even get me started on the QUEEN :disco:
 
Oh and the new version of the theme tune is gorgeous, I immediately rewound it to listen again (brilliant new opening titles too).
 
It gave me the updated TNG (DS9) era vibe I’ve been desperate for. Spin THAT off into its own series, you fuckers!

I wouldn't go that far, but this and Discovery overlapping for a couple of weeks certainly highlights some quite big differences between the two shows (generally in Picard's favour).

I think I'll rewatch this episode at least once in the next few days. That Borg Queen moment really was my TOP TOOT OF THE WEEK, they knew there's no way to ever top her original entrance so here's something completely different :disco:
 
Maybe I need to rewatch season 1 and this episode but it confused the HELL out of me. When did they all end up in Starfleet, wtf? Or is that part of the "we're not in the correct universe" stuff? Totally baffled. Nice to see Guinan and Q anyway. Still think Q should have turned into a Draconequus

I quite liked that they all ended up in starfleet. Clearly it was a passage of time thing between seasons, and with a longer season they might have managed to do some decent explainer episodes. But Patrick Stewart hasn't got a 24 episode season in him.

That said, if the remaining cast did a spin off without him, it'd still be 50x better than Discovery.

Yeah, I think around eighteen months to two years have passed in-universe as well as in real life. I'm benefitting from my recent season one binge here, but it seems as though the events in the finale led to full pardons from Starfleet, and in the case of Rios and Raffi they had largely resolved the personal issues that caused them to leave so why not return I suppose. Elnor as a cadet was a slight head scratcher at first, but Picard guiding the first Romulan into Starfleet feels quite in character I think!
 
Something I appreciate is that (unless they give us an alternative explanation later), the Borg being so diminished retroactively adds some importance to the events of Voyager as Janeway's actions in the finale are presumably what caused this. They're sort of doing this on Star Trek Prodigy as well, where Starfleet have multiple experimental ships based on technologies Voyager brought back with them :disco:

It made sense for Q - not really out of character. I think they could have gotten away with not saying anything for Guinan.
 
Oh god that was fantastic again, John De Lancie absolutely hit the ground running and gave us a version of Q that felt familiar, but quite dangerous and more unhinged than usual. The scene where he SLAPPED Picard was quite :shock: The alternative world was a lot more interesting than I was expecting, and I particularly enjoyed hearing about Picard's various victories and that quite horrifying parade of skulls (along with the ones that were named, was the Ferengi one meant to be Grand Nagus Zek? :( Or Rom? :(:(). Oh and I was so happy at the mention of General Sisko, I'll ignore the fact it doesn't fully make sense in-universe for him to exist :tongueout: And another Borg Queen! More traditional looking this time, but I loved her performance... I'm assuming she'll go rogue, maybe once they're back in the past and she can start assimilating to her heart's content :o

I wonder if Soji just isn't going to play much of a role this season? It certainly doesn't seem like they're going to find her in this new timeline, so surely she can't go to the past with them... I suppose it depends how many episodes are set in 2024, maybe they return quite quickly and she shows up later on.
 
Another very good episode, wasn't quite up there with the first two but still liked it a lot. The stuff with Rios felt a little bit contrived (just give him the fucking badge!) but I have no doubt him sticking with the doctor will end up being important later. Loved all the stuff with Agnes, Picard and the Queen... this Queen is definitely going to try and double cross them at every opportunity, and I can't wait :disco: As for Elnor, that HAS to be undone right? I did find it funny that the one character who didn't look totally human gets killed off right as they land, I figured they would just do a Spock and have him throw on a lovely HAT but no!

Also, appropriately for a time-travel story this week's episode was directed by Lea Thompson of Back To The Future fame :o
 
Also - Sanctuary Districts! I wonder if the Bell Riots are happening in San Francisco at the same time as these events :shock:
 
Loved that! Fun episode again, it feels like everything's moving along nicely - the Queen toying with Agnes remains a highlight :disco:
 
I know they can probably explain it due to the time stuff, but I wish they’d acknowledge that they meant to have met in the 1800s. He could at least ask about Samuel Clemens.

The showrunner tweeted that because Picard travelled back from a timeline where the Federation (and the Enterprise) didn't exist, those events didn't happen for this version of Guinan. It just about holds together for me (as much as Star Trek's inconsistent time travel rules ever do) but I am surprised they didn't do more with Guinan not remembering the events but sensing them somehow, Yesterday's Enterprise style.

The recast didn't bother me, I thought the actress did well as a younger/wearier version of the character, and if they'd used Whoopi you know they'd have tried to CGI her and it would've looked weird.
 
In the good old days, Picard would have mentioned meeting before, she would have said they haven’t, and then he would realise why and say why.
 
This week was FINE, things feel like they're running out of steam slightly but there's plenty of threads that could pick things up. I know that reusing actors is a bit of a Star Trek tradition, but I swear this HAS TO be the final time we get Brent Spiner back as another member of the Soong family :oi: I'm hoping there's a reason the Watcher looks like Laris, though Orla Brady is so watchable that I can overlook it if there isn't. I also assume that there's a lot more to the season's plot than simply 'convince Picard's ancestor to go into space' since there are still five more episodes :tongueout:

RIP (sort of) to my favourite character :( Though having her live inside Agnes's head has the potential to be either great fun or a bit annoying, depending on where they go with it. I've seen speculation that Agnes might actually have been inside that Queen suit in the first episode, and it feels like this could be leading to that...

Yeah this week's episode was a little off-peak I'd say. Scene changes felt a little rushed and disjointed.

Little disappointed that the entire premise of the season is Star Trek: first contact. Alright, not entirely, but you know what I mean.
 
What I would LOVE is a conversation with the Queen revealing stuff about the history of the Borg - i.e. how they came about. (I’d also love to know what species the Queen is - I heard a great theory that she’s El-Aurian).
 
Disco is more like Star Trek Nemesis - unwatchable and we need to pretend it never existed.
