Star Trek: Picard

I appreciate TOS more than I actively enjoy it, I'd say - I find it hard to properly engage with it as it's just a bit too old-fashioned feeling, as much as that probably makes me some sort of philistine :tongueout: I feel the same about most of Doctor Who from that era as well, though I absolutely love The Avengers so I don't think it's just an aversion to Sixties stuff...

That's my take on both TOS and Doctor Who. I watched these shows as a child in the 80s but couldn't properly engage with them either. TOS felt dated, even back then and the terrible production values on Doctor Who basically put me off for life.

I have seen TOS loads of times but wouldn't ever think to actively watch it, mainly because it's so 60s, the men are all heroes and the women are bits of additional fluff who aren't really important but need to be there in short skirts for the sex-pest men.
I love TNG and Voyager and have watched them both multitudes of times.
I've watched Enterprise through twice, not that fussed by it and probably won't watch it again.
Don't like DS9 much but that's mainly due to Sisko's lack of acting talent and the way he overpronounces everything but I'm not a fan of Chief O'Brien, Keiko, Odo or Kira either. I probably enjoyed the silly Ferengi-centric episodes the most (with Quarks moogie and The Grand Negus). All the Dominion stuff, changelings and Jem Hadar is just a yawnfest.
I loved Discovery until they took it off Netflix and I'm too cheap to subscribe to yet another bloody channel just to watch it.
I've also got all the movies on DVD but I never bother watching The Motion Picture because it's pants. Love the rest of them, even the one with Tom Hardy as Praetor Shinzon where they have stretchy-skin faces that everybody else hates (think it's Nemesis).
I haven't watched any of the animated series' like Lower Decks or the original animated series.

I have Haynes manuals for NASA's ISS and Space Shuttle (real-life spacecraft) so Mr F bought me a Haynes manual for USS Enterprise (NX-01 through to Enterprise E).

So I suppose all of the above makes me a Trekkie. :D

Close! Shinzon is Nemesis, the stretchy face people was Insurrection :D
 
I've always felt that Insurrection got a bad rap at the time. It's basically a solid TNG two-parter with a movie budget, which is fine by me :D
 
Insurrection was ok. They did need to aim for a bigger story (it was a motion picture after all) but I suppose it gave the rest of the cast more opportunities to feature.

I honestly don't mind Nemesis, aside Beverly going missing for most of it.
 
Wow was not expecting Ro Laren! Completely out of the blue, I never even thought about her. Great stuff though with amending stuff with Picard.... shame how it went.

Noticed when the terrorism scene was played back and the debris was falling out of the sky there's a prominent red figure in the middle of it. This something we're meant to notice?

Realised who Shaw reminds me of. Our director at work. He's exactly the same, you have a certain level of sympathy and respect for him but he does all this smirking superiority, assumption that everyone else is incompetent, lazy or downright malicious and that he's the only one who can see a bigger picture. Communicated through the same sarcastic quips, "Humour" and trash talk

This week's episode was great but
I loved it mainly for the reunion of the core TNG cast members - the affection between them was palpable because unlike other casts, you know they remain really close friends in real life.

However the appearance of the Data/Lore/B4 amalgam would have had so much more impact were Brent Spiner NOT to have already featured countless times in the series before. He was absolutely unnecessary in the second season. I like him a lot but he has been overused in Picard.

Also this season is somewhat in danger of being eaten up by all the nostalgia and Easter eggs at the expense of a solid story being told. I don't need more references to TOS. This is meant to be celebrating the 24th century series' anyway.

And on that note, why were more recent Enterprises not shown at the Fleet museum? Where was the E or the newly decommissioned F?

I think I'm totally in love with this series, each episode has been better than the last in my opinion.

Weirdest thing when I was watching it this morning was near the end when Vadic's there, every time I've seen her on screen I've thought she looked familiar but when she smiled I realised she's Honeybunny from Pulp Fiction (stick up in the diner) "any of you fecking pricks move and I'll execute every motherfecking last one of you!" :D
 
It is a rather fantastic series. The callbacks to old series are getting a bit hammy, and it still feels like there are more questions than can be answered in the remaining episodes, but fascinated to see how it all ties up.
 
Before I saw the episode, I saw a headline of a review saying it was the first misfire episode of the series.

NOT LIKELY!

Sure there was less excitement but ...

Featuring all the main TNG cast! The TNG AND Voyager theme tunes creeping in! How could you not geek out

There are some very fun easter eggs in Daystrom Station, but none of them beat this for me :D
 
Very interesting episode in general. Somewhat shocked by Geordi's.. I'm just gonna say cowardice.. but glad he came right in the end.

I do think however they might as well have called this show Star Trek Soong. Shoehorning Spiner into every other role is getting ridiculous now. One face woven throughout history like he's Doctor Who or something.
 
I see why they did it at the time (particularly as it was a different showrunner who wouldn't have known about the plans for this season) but it really would've been best for everyone if Brent Spiner hadn't been in season two. Have that character, maybe even have him be a Soong if they must, but just have him played by someone else. It would've made the appearance of Data/Lore/everyone in this episode feel SO much more earned, rather than the slight "oh there he is again" feeling it actually caused :D
 
I probably said it at the time, but having Brent Spiner AND Isa Briones playing different characters (but with similar relationships to each other) made season two feel like American Horror Story to me. Just so unnecessary!

On reflection, aside from Rios's storyline (his exit was an absolute waste of a great character), I think Season 2 was the weakest of the bunch. It was poorly written.

Agnes breaking out into song and the band picking up to accompany her straight away felt like the series had jumped the shark at that point.

Season 3 might as well be an entirely different show.

After that opening scene,
there's no way we won't see the real Tuvok before the end surely? And I really feel like they've namedropped Janeway too much for her not to appear :eyes:
 
It is getting a bit comical that no DS9 characters have appeared though, particularly in an episode titled Dominion :D
 
They really have to start explaining what's happening with Jack though, come on now.
 
They must bring in a DS9 character at this rate, surely?

Miles O’Brien would be the easiest fit for obvious reasons. I could see them doing Kira too.

I'd love to see a surprise return for Miles. I mean, he does have the second most appearances of any Star Trek character.

This show taking its entire plot from DS9 but not featuring any of its characters is really starting to GRIND MY GEARS :oi:

I am confident we'll have an appearance by someone by the end of the season, most likely Kira.

O'Brien doesn't count :evil:
 
I was a bit shocked that Troi (or Riker) didn't appear at all in that episode. The cliffhanger from the previous episode was completely dropped. :confused: She doesn't appear to have much to do this season.

Loving Beverly's increased role though. Still can't figure out what Jack's story is...
Is her not their child at all?

I found that all a bit confusing if truth be told. Probably need to watch it again.
