In the beginning, yes, my dad has to fund it himself because my gran left him about £20k and a few shares when she died and he put it in an ISA instead of frittering it away. So if you have over £23500 in assets you have to pay for it all yourself until your assets drop below that amount. Once Social Services pay their part and his pension is paid to the home too it's either a topup fee of £36 a week if he needs nursing care (if he does, the NHS also contributes which is why it's less than if he doesn't) or £75 a week if he's just residential care but that money has to be paid by another family member, not him.

Had it not been such a sudden rush to get him in a home we could have "siphoned" off some money months ago but it wouldn't wash now.

This home is about fifteen minutes' walk from my house and I often walk Ridley past there so one of my questions was whether I could pop in with Ridley sometimes to visit my dad (he loves Ridley) and was told yes, anytime, as long as he (Ridley) wouldn't mind the other residents and nurses fussing over him too.

That is great @Floppet that you have found a decent care home for him. Are you going to look at other care homes to compare, or are you happy with this one? What is the process now to get him moved from hospital in to the care home? Hopefully things can move quickly for you all, to give you and your family time to adjust.

There are only four within reasonable distance of my mum and two of them only do residential care so they're off the list as it's likely he'll need nursing care as he's got a catheter in. Mum and Aunty have been to see both and both of them preferred this one even though the other one is within walking distance of my mum's house. It's a converted pub and was my actual local when I was young. The one near me that they've chosen is purpose built so it's laid out a lot better and has lovely enclosed gardens and beautiful views of Winter Hill and the fields from the upstairs rooms at the front of the building.

It's taking a bit longer because my mum technically lives in Salford, about a mile from the Bolton border. So he comes under Salford Social Services but is in Bolton Hospital so Salford and Bolton's teams have to liase with each other and it's a right bloody faffaround. He's had a RAID assessment so now we have to wait for the care-home people to interview him.

Dry February lasted about 13 hours then (I started on Jan 2nd, so Feb 1st was my last day).

Managed to rein myself in after four glasses of lunchtime wine, so was pleasantly pissed but sober enough to be fine now for bed. A triumph.
